New thread based on a quote from RWebb (my custom bumper project)
Quote:
I took that car to the So Cal All-Porsche Swap & Car Display in Anaheim circa 2014 and listened to the comments as folks walked by. Understand that this was a hard core Porsche gathering with a heavy R Gruppe presence. All negative. Gruppenmeister wouldn't even go look at it. I was an R Gruppe member at the time. Took it over to a party at Techweenie's house and he thought it sucked. I realized then that my thoughts about the Porsche world were not very well supported. Then, suddenly, after my wife was injured in a rear-ender in that Carrera with 'those' bumpers, I removed them, sold the car and said "adios" to 911 ownership. Within months the prices or air cooled Porsches went out of my reach confirming my disassociation with the cars. Oh, we still have a 2000 Boxster that we've owned for 18 years, but people make fun of those (too). Not a fun group of car enthusiasts for me. Why am I still around? Beats the fook out of me. (subscript: why do we gather at meets? Why do we gather here? We want others to see our participation in the hobby or whatever you want to call it. We want to be proud of what we bring no matter how humble. When people tell you your car sucks, that's not something that makes one want to continue — — it was time.) |

Milt, were you the one that fabbed up a longhood style front bumper for the impact bumper cars?

I saw the post in the other thread...didn't know what it was about....thought it was "positive" fwiw. If it was a jab at you....well, that pretty much sums up what PPOT has become for some folks
imo...and sucks. Best to ya Milt....appreciate ya man! |

Milt, I don't know what thread or what's been said, but some of those R Gruppe guys are nuts. Its their way or highway even isn't their fooking car similar to historical Nazis for homes I have dealt with. They always have some negative siht to say and are never satisfy with anything but they ain't paying for it and it isn't even their house. I just finished up a 72 stripped out track car but its registered for the street. Ride and sound like crap. Straight pipe. I never take it to shows because I just don't want to hear from them or have to answer why I butchered up a perfectly good car. Then there are the nuts and bolts guys that will tell ya its the wrong bolt. Do you really give a rat's ass about what they think? There's a bunch of pretty good R Gruppe guys too, but some are like high school all over again, you gotta belong. When someone ask if I was going to joint R Gruppe now that I have the car. The answer was a fast, NO.

I remember those bumpers.
From what I recall, we were all fairly impressed with the amount of work that went into them. Personally, I loved the black leather jacket. Not sure where the negative comments came from. |

What would the 6 y.o. me say? Once per year you get cake and ice cream and people treat you nicely. The rest of the year everyone sucks.

It’s hard to grasp context in an Internet post, but it seems like a genuine compliment to me. I think I remember when you were doing those bumpers, back in the day. I’m not very connected to other Porsche owners in real life, so I don’t know what the popular opinion is, but I am surprised that you got a negative reaction to your design.
You’ve posted enough of your work over the years to show you are a true craftsman and a magician with tools and your own sweat. From my perspective of what you’ve shown here on the board, your taste and design sense are exquisite. You’re an inspiration to people like me who were born all thumbs and are barely trusted with a pair of pliers and a screwdriver. Anyone who puts you down can kiss my @ss.

Milt, thought and still think the front bumper was insanely good. I was really disappointed that it was a one off since I would have popped for one for my 82. Signed, one of the R Gruppe nuts.

I thought I would chime in as I was the lucky guy that purchased " those bumpers " from Milt . At the time I had an SC coupe and I hated the look of the impact bumpers . When I received Milt's bumpers I literally sat in my garage and stared/drooled for a long time in my opinion they were perfect ! When I did the initial fitment before painting them I found out I had to do NOTHING to them they fit perfect .
Pretty amazing for a " one off hand build " . I got positive comments on the car everywhere I went , from the grocery store to PCA events . I ended up trading that car/bumpers to Jake Raby in exchange for him building me my killer engine in my Boxster S . I recently found out Jake sold that car/bumper to someone local here in Georgia . I hope the new owner appreciates what he has . As many of us know Milt is an old time craftsman , his attention to detail and his ability to transfer an image from his head to his hands is amazing . I wish I had his skills . He and I became " internet friends " over those bumpers and we still are long distance buddies ![]() ![]()

When doing custom work on an iconic car, it's best to plan to please yourself, and ignore what others have to say about it.

The Singer 911 actually reminded me of Milt's bumpers.

Does anyone actually care about what RWebb says?

One of the strangest threads I've read.
Looked to me that he was just complimenting something. ![]()

Are there pictures of these bumpers so that I, arbiter of of taste, keeper of all opinions worth knowing, may cast my gaze upon them and pass judgement? ![]() Seriously, I'd like to see what they look like. I never liked the impact bumpers. Just curious, Milt.
