so, going to Canada and then Alaska.
next summer is slated to be very slow at work. when that happens we get shipped off to where the work is. mainly Los Angeles. i am cool with it, but i figured a 6-week vacation driving to Dawson City, Yukon Territory sounds much funner.
this is my last planned Harrah, with my 2006 Toyota Tacoma. do some preventative maint, head north, then drive it back and sell it. (unless it totally kicksass) i just looked at gun laws in Canada. what a muddy mess? handguns are a no-go unless it has a long barrel (for bears?)..so i would be handgun less. or i buy a hand cannon. knives? hahaha..i cant even decode that law. no folding knives unless i need two hands to open it? i am sure i can manage camping and moving into the Yukon with a Swiss Army Knife..but really? they cant possibly limit the hunters going to AK like that can they? can anyone shine light on this? it seems like a great adventure trip. never been up there before. i hope it happens, but who knows in today's climate. and dogs? can i get my camp dog across the border?

Your dog should be no issue as long as you have vaccination papers, as I understand it.
No flick knives, but in my experience that is pretty well understood to only mean knives that have a spring load to unfold, never known anyone to have an issue with a folding knife. Hand guns are quite common here, but lots of rules as to when/where that make it pretty useless for your purposes. Can't really transport it with you. You can mail them ahead to Alaska if you want though, no issue. You will go through some impressive land on that trip, and the territories are harsh but beautiful. Hope you make it, you will enjoy it for sure. If you are passing through Calgary I'd love to buy you a beer, or put you up for a night if you need. And if your truck gives you any issues in this area I have a lift and tooling you are welcome to at home.

The guns laws here have just changed again...
My bear gun for hiking is a Rossi RanchHand in 44 Mag. You can bring this into Canada (declare it at the border) and you will be fine. This will take down a griz no problem.

I heard the road is all paved now on the AlCan highway. Is that true?
It is a long trip and from what I hear the bears have pretty much learned that cars are just a canned human inside. So broke down on the road the bears come rip the door off and eat you. ![]()

If your Toyota is a 4x4, it's worth more up there.
Perhaps sell it in Skagway, and hop on the Alaska State Ferry back to Bellingham, WA. The ferry stops at the tourist places like Juneau and Ketchikan, but also the out-of-the-way little towns like Petersburg. The ferry has cabins, or room out on the rear deck for tents. Food is available on board, with excellent whale watching. ... Now you're stuck in Bellingham, with no wheels. |

The road is fully paved but they may be doing chip seal paving which will make miles worse than if it were gravel and take out your windshield too...

Something else to check, your Benelli m4 holds 5+1, I think the max here is 4+1, if so you req a plug. The other day in Northern BC someone was almost killed by a lone wolf, pretty rare attack though.

We vacationed in Alaska and one adventure was a river trip in the Kenai Peninsula. The shores were lined with fishermen. That was in early July.

I've been thinking about that trip for the summer too. Go up highway 1 from california. See the coast. The gun laws kinda worry me too. I would not do the trip unless I had a hunting caliber on hand. Just have declare the weapon at the borders? rifles okay?

Most rifles are ok. You need to declare it at the border.
The idiot in Ottawa (yellowbelly’s friend), banned a bunch of our rifles effective May 1st. We will see if this ban sticks...

Yes, dogs are fine with vaccination records.
Can't help with the gun laws but I do know about bear spray - you can bring it but it has to be the large size, not the small purse pepper spray sizes. In addition I travel with a couple of large cans of hornet spray for those pesky humanlike bees, does not have to be declared, no problem at all. |

I was thinking of an old 0.300 carcano. Military grade weapon by definition. But that's crazy, I didn't realize it was a grab all. |

Now I can add another bucket list item to that trip and dream of taking the ferry back. What a journey that would be. I took the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles after a cruise once, and my wife and I agreed that someday we would love to do a long ferry ride along the coast.
