He shoulda been wearing a helmet.

Per this BBC link

Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, director of the Meribel resort, told Radio Monte Carlo Sport: "He was shocked, a little shaken but conscious.

"It may be a head injury but it is not very serious."

He added: "He was wearing a helmet and banged [his head] against a rock."

So fortunately he was wearing a helmet and it was not too serious.

Good thing the helmet was on.
Even the hardest of heads don't hold up well against granite.

Formula1.com is reporting that he's in a coma in critical condition. MS is one of my heroes. I hope he pulls through this OK. So sad to see someone accomplish what he has only to get bit by a rock on a slope, even after taking precautions by wearing a helmet. Life can be so cruel.

Holy crap this is awful. Since I first posted this, the news sounded less and less serious, now the news is sounding grim.

Reminds me of Liam Neeson's wife who had a similar accident. Was OK then less OK then dead the next day. This is dreadful. Hard to control brain swelling, I guess, and takes a little time to show just how badly injured one is.

I hope he's going to be OK!!

I just read this news on Autosport.

Wishing him all the best for a speedy recovery, thank goodness he was wearing a helmet otherwise we might have been reading even worse news.

I really hope he pulls through and recovers from this!

Yes, sad news. Hope the reports improve. At least he sought treatment, didn't Neeson's wife refuse care at first.

You can never be too careful with head injuries, as anyone knows who's been knocked unconscious, you really don't know how bad it can be after even a small bump!

this is tough to hear for the racers and race fans among us.

his pr team has just announced that his condition has been called "super critical"

pray for Michael as he is much more than a racer...fight!

Prayers for Schumi! I sincerely hope he pulls through, but it does sound serious. I read his 14 year old son was skiing with him, and Michael was wearing a helmet at the time of the fall.

Though many did not care for him, I always liked watching him drive and hope he comes out of this OK.

from a post by ricksb on fchat:

More details...doesn't sound good. Best wishes to he and his family....

They saw blood oozing from his helmet in the eight minutes between the fall and medics arriving in a helicopter to pick him up.
The accident happened while Schumacher was skiing off-piste.
Yesterday a spokesman for the resort said it proved 'you can't do whatever you want', and that skiers should stay on the pistes.

Last night the Dauphine Libere newspaper in Grenoble reported that the German's life was in danger.
Its report read: 'The state of health of the veteran driver has worsened and his condition is considered life-threatening, according to our information.'
The Dauphine is one of the most respected papers in the Alps, with reliable medical contacts.

Brain surgeon Gerard Saillant has arrived at the hospital in Grenoble to treat the Formula 1 star
Schumacher, who turns 45 on Friday, was skiing with his 14-year-old son Mick in Meribel, in the Trois Vallees ski area of the French Alps.
He owns a property in the popular resort.
He was at an altitude of almost 7,000ft at an 'off-piste junction' between two marked descents – Chamois, a red run, and Biche, a blue run, according to ski resort officials.
Eyewitnesses who called the emergency services reported seeing blood coming from his helmet and marking the snow around.
Olivier Desaulty, a spokesman for Meribel Alpina, a ski lift company, said: 'Some skiers saw the accident and called us.
'We immediately sent two ski patrols who were close by. They checked him and called a helicopter.
'Apparently he was briefly – a minute or so – unconscious. But he came around quickly and was then talking.
'He said he had hit his head on a rock. He was wearing a helmet fortunately. The helicopter arrived very quickly and he was taken to hospital.”
A spokesman for mountain rescue said: 'He fell and hit his head at 11.07am. A helicopter was at the site at 11.15am.

my very sad suspicion is that friends and family are being told to rush to the hospital to pay their last respects. this has a very bad feel to it. this is just crushing.

I do hope I am wrong
