Rugged Mars terrain has severely damaged the Curiosity rover's wheels, showing the harsh conditions of the Martian surface.

It landed on November 26, 2011. On December 2012, Curiosity's two-year mission was extended indefinitely as it was stil going strong. Curiosity has been active on Mars for 4202 sols or over 11 Earth years.

This is where it all began 65 years ago, and this Postcard from Moon looks at the region where Earth’s first messenger arrived at the Moon.
Luna 2, launched in September of 1959, had impacted on the Moon! The planned crash of the 300-kilogram emissary from Earth proclaimed the Earthmen were coming! What no would have believed at the time is that it would take less than 10 years from the impact of Luna 2 on northeastern Mare Imbrium to Neil Armstrong’s small step for mankind on the plains of Mare Tranquillitatis.
In 1959, Apollo would seem like a science fiction dream. The reality of the fledgling attempts to reach the Moon in the first years of the space age were marked by spectacular rocket explosions or failures. But here on the Moon’s northwest quadrant stood the shattered remains of Luna 2 marking the stunning achievement of reaching the Moon less than two years after the first artificial satellite brightened the dark night sky.
Deep space spacecraft tracking was a crude in the late 1950’s and the precise impact point of Luna 2 eludes us, but it is believed to be just north of Palus Putredinis, the tongue of smooth basalt extending southeast from 88-kilometer Archimedes crater at the image left. To commemorate the arrival of the first spacecraft to reach the Moon, the region north of Putredinis and roughly bordered by Archimedes, 55-kilometer Aristillus at the upper right, and 40-kilometer Autolycus at center right, is now known as Sinus Lunicus, the Bay of Lunik. The name is derived from the popular name applied to the spacecraft by the news media of the day, a combination of Luna and Sputnik.

A "petrified" ladder in Baume-les-Messieurs, France
The ladder most likely underwent the process of calcification. Being laid on the limestone surroundings known to contain calcium carbonate, when the rainwater poured over, it dissolved the carbonate compounds contained in limestone and subsequently soaked the surface of the ladder in calcium and magnesium ions.
Over time, the minerals solidified on ladder's surface. Researchers estimate the ladder is roughly 150 years old

The Porsche 917 sports prototype racing car's air-cooled flat-twelve engine was introduced in 1969. The engine was based on the 917's previous flat-eight engine, but with a V12 crankshaft configuration instead of a boxer configuration. The engine's unique design, which Porsche called the "180° V12", helped keep the engine compact. The engine's opposite pistons would reach top-dead and bottom-dead center at the same time, and the crankshaft had two rods that shared the engine's six journals. This design also reduced the number of bearings that needed lubrication, which lowered friction and allowed for a shorter and lighter crankshaft.

1912 version of - "Good Tires," Bob mused, casually lighting a cigarette, "but certainly not great tires."

During World War I, German engineer Otto Steinitz had the idea of testing aircraft engines and propellers on railcars. Carl Geissen designed the engine mount, and testing was carried out on a special track at the German Aviation Research Institute in Berlin. The test car reached speeds of up to 97 mph (140 km/h). After the war, the propeller-driven railcar concept led Steinitz to design a special two-axle car with a mount for an aircraft engine at each end. Known as the Dringos-Wagen, the machine made a 25-mile (40-km) test run from Grunewald to Beelitz on 11 May 1919.

We all have people we know with half-arsed ideas.
