How does this scam work? $25K for your car. Without even checking it out.

I'm in a parking lot loading up the 911. A guy in a minivan with out of state plates asks me if I'm interested in selling. I say not really. He says I'll give you $25K. Cash. I told him he doesn't even know what shape it's in. So he says, OK, what does it need. I rattle off a couple of items that need to be addressed. Still sitting in his car he says, no big deal. Will you take $25K? I told him to give me his number and I'll think about it. He said to call him and he'll see if he can go higher. He never stepped foot out of his car. This is the second time the exact same thing has happened.
What gives?

Happens all the time now, all over the place. Places like Beverly Hills Car Club pay finders fees to guys like this.
I'm still waiting for the wad of cash to be presented... when they do I'll empty out the glove box, hand over my key, and call an Uber.

This happened probably half the time I took my 930 out into the wild. A bit less often, but still was still a fairly regular occurrence with my "normal" 911s.

Possibly just hunting for an address so they can pick it up later for free.

Locked in a garage and disabled even in my garage. But if they do manage to take it, it's insure for way more than what they offered.

No one can resist a Targa...I’m a rag top man as well.

I sold my non road worthy 80 SC Targa that needed a lot of work for really excellent money last year. I was surprised.

Don’t be tempted!

pretty much

Don't sell, you will kick yourself.

I get people trying to buy my car all the time, if I am driving something groovy that day.

It's possible your car is worth $30k, or more.

The next step is for him to take some pictures and then tell you I need to call my "cousin" he will be the one buying it. Then he will make a phone call to the person he is trying to flip the car to and send them the pics hoping they want the car. Then he will tell you he will be back with the cash most likely will not. Not really a scam just a gypsy trying to make money on the deal.

Maybe not a scam afterall? I bet they just flip cars and make a few bucks and hope to fish for a low price and score. If you are interested in selling, go over to AAA and exchange money. No home address. If they are serious, they will go with ya.

I moved my 911 out of the garage space it normally resides in to move it to the work bay where the lift and my tools are. I have to put the El Camino in the other space, so the 911 sat in my parking area up on the end of the driveway for a couple of minutes while I moved the Elky.

Before I could pull it in some guy asked if he could buy it. I told him my standard answer, it is not for sale at any reasonable price. So he wanted to know the number. I told him 50K and then regretted that, I should have said 75K.

He did the same "I have to call my brother in California" and I told him I had things to do, so I needed to leave. When it is parked at home it is in the garage, and locked. I even unhooked the battery for a a few months. He knows where I live.

Evidently he was driving through the neighborhood looking to give "free estimates" to do a roofing job after we had a hail storm. Like I would use him for that ever. I have a local business roofer that pup on my last roof that I know and trust.

This is what I'm thinking also. He did take a pic and said he would have to talk to his friend and see what he can do.
Not calling him back. If and when I decide to sell, I'll just take out an ad. I didn't feel very comfortable with the way it all went.

And say I did sell, with all the banks closed what would i do, meet somewhere and he shows up with 250 $100 bills? Then what, do I bring one of those pens to check if the bills are real and swipe all 250 of 'em? Ain't that desperate.

Not just Porsches.

I had people stopping and wanting to buy my old Sierra pickup once in a while...

Now I know why as it moves into the "vintage" category...

Also scouters for Euro buyers. One stopped at the end of my friend's driveway and made an offer of 18K for a SC that he bought for 6K 2 years before. This was about 3 years ago.

He took it. Car needed a lot of cosmetic work.

At your bank. Deposit the money, they check the bills.
