For the first time in my life, I'm going to do a mail in ballot. I just got off the phone with the election office and requested it.

I told the lady I didn't trust anyone these days, but have to start somewhere, given the mess from the pandemic and how crazy it's going to be at the voting precincts.

Online sounds nice but I'm afraid right now mail-in seems a lot more secure.

This also from a monthly SS recipient - and they haven't messed anything up from day 1!

The safety precautions are available.
If they want a larger voter turn-out..the answer is make it easier to vote.

I have VPN. I wonder how many ballots I could cast.

Online is not secure. In-person with an ID check is best. Absentee second, with notary certification.

How many people (other than you) use your bank account online? Why does that work?

Voter turnout-out will never increase until they make it easy to vote.
The antiquated rules of voting are never going to help.
My vote will not be recorded until I can do it easily.

Authenticator app.

Rolling 6 digit code, only lasts 30 seconds.

Use one with all my sensitive accounts.

I don’t have a problem with online voting being secure, but as many have said you would get a greater voter turnout which may or may not be good for society, but it sure isn’t good for people trying to get elected.

If I was running or trying to keep my place, the less people voting would mean I would have to get less people to vote for me to turn it in my favor. The people in office know this and since they are the ones trying to stay in office and also are the ones that would have to change the system...

The WA state ballots have a code so you can go online and check that your vote was counted.

I don't see why a first step couldn't be sending me that code via USPS as they already do, and I use that + DL# or something to authenticate and log in to cast my vote online. The USPS remains in the process, but not on the return side.

I say we do it! But it's your job to teach all the 70 somethings out there how to do it. I've had my fill just helping my parents with their Iphones.

No Capthca's

Same as entering a code texted to you except they are generated on the fly every 30 seconds and synced with the site so if you go to use it and the code expires in 5 seconds just wait 6 seconds for a new code.

Whether or not any of us are for or against it is really immaterial. If it can be turned to the advantage of the people in a position to make the change, it will happen.

So...without getting political..why hasn't it happened??
Are no votes worth more than any votes?

Good basic idea, useless implementation. Neither email nor SMS is secure. And it's quite terrifying the # of people - including banks - that think they are...

For MFA, use OATH or FIDO - if you don't want a hardware dongle, some password managers store the hash encrypted and generate the token themselves.
