I found a Youtube channel, “Brass Fetcher”, with a whole bunch of slow mo video showing different ammunition against ballistic gelatin. Also against car doors, windshields, etc. No 20 minutes of irritating yammering by someone waving his camera around like a drunkard getting paid by the word. Just short wordless videos.

The birdshot vs gelatin looks pretty, um, attention getting if not outright discouraging. Massive damage in the first several inches of gelatin. Humans aren’t very “deep” - speaking geometrically, not philosophically - so I’m not sure why it’s important for a home defense round to penetrate 8” or 10”. I don’t think a home invader in body armor is a scenario I’m going to bother about.

I don't get mixing shot? What purpose does it serve? Seems confusing. A little bit O' this, a little bit O' that?

It's all 00-K or S. If I am picking up a 12Ga. there is but one objective, turn out the lights of what ever it is pointed at as quickly as possible. A single slug in the sternum. If they need to use a shop vac to clean up? so be it.

you can put in something less then lethal first to piss off the perp real good
then follow up with buck shot to put him down
then a slug in the face so his mother can't have an open casket.

It's all about delivering a range of emotional support.

There is a way to cut a birdshot shell to essentially turn it into a slug, but it doesn't work well for subsequent shots on a self-loading scatterspoon.

A slug will go through 1.25" bullet resistant glass. Just sayin'.

LOL, yeah one slug center mass and I am going back to bed. I'll deal with the mess in the morning.

Interesting story of survival after being shot three times at close range by a shotgun. The X-rays appear to show bird shot. The video of his story of survival is inspriring but the point of posting the video is, if this kid (not big by an means) was coming at you maybe impaired would you rely on bird shot to protect you?

Not only was he shot three times once in the chest and once in the head but he was able to get up and travel some distance. Reverse the roles, if he was on the offensive and attacking, knew what was happening, taking evasive action and maybe on drugs, psychotics a larger person or something that he would not immediately feel pain or stop would he have been able to overtake the person with the shot gun and cause harm? I think this is an argument against Bird shot.

Don't bring a 9mm to a 00 buckshot fight....or a knife .

If an intruder is in your house...would you prefer "they" had a 9mm or 870 (00 buck)?

Use defensive loads folks....they are designed for that....not ducks, not rabbits, nor quail

There was a guy in GA shot 6 times with a 9mm - several times in the head. He wasn’t DRT.
I used that as an example when my friend down there asked if he should get another 9mm or something starting with a 4.

I’m still good with solid slugs.
If I am ever put into the situation where I am forced to shoot at someone I only want to have pull the trigger once. But I have a little space around the house, so overpenetration isn’t my biggest worry. Stopping them ASAP is.

Edit. 5x and a .38. Misremembered. Mea culpa

There is a big difference between 9mm FMJ 115 grain target rounds and 124 (or 147) grain Hollow Point +P or +P+ rounds.
For all I know, the GA owner may have been using reloads with a lighter load for that .38

My brother shut a guy off with a 9mm - centernass. Like he flipped a switch.

He doesn’t talk about it much, but I did get “it’s not like in the movies”.

Anything is better than nothing I suppose.

My friend clipped a guy in the leg with a slug, he bled out in seconds. Hit him above the knee.

That would ruin your interior decorating for sure.
