Real Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship is a word used often and likely overused a lot. I am not a really a craftsman. My carpentry skills would make my old shop teacher cry. My end results are sturdy, and usually rather ugly.

I would love to spend a day with the real craftsman that built this tool box, and knew how to use all those tools to build a piano. I would never let him see my woodwork.

I'll have to wait to watch the video later, but I've often thought that I'd love to be able to spend some time watching or working with Milt/Zeke. Some of the stuff that I've seen and read about him doing is very cool.

Norm! I loved that show.

My nickname, bestowed upon me by my father and grandfather, both talented carpenters and craftsmen, was "Wood Butcher".

They couldn't hit a curve ball, so I had that going for me...

There’s also a book on it. I got to see it in person several years ago in Iowa; very impressive.

I was talking to a finish carpenter friend years ago and he was talking about hand wood planes that are absurdly expensive. That triggered him telling me about the Studley tool chest.

I'm going to paste this video on his Facebook wall. He'll get a kick out of it. Thanks.

Here's Studley and his chest:

If you click to watch the video on youtube, there are other suggested videos of some pretty cool, similar stuff (although not quite to the same level).

I had the pleasure of spending the day with Sam Maloof. One of the most extraordinary craftsman I have ever met. Enjoy!

Cool videos guys.
I love working with wood, but find it totally frustrating as being an ex-machinist I'm used to the 'material' being able to hold really tight tolerances. Wood just never would do that for me.

A friend of mine, Greg Bloomfield makes whacky furniture, cabinets etc. One of his had an opening door so well made it was fairly much invisible. He put his skills down to boat building with his dad as a kid.

I understand that a finish carpenters tool chest was their resume back in the day. It was a representation of their best work and what they could do.

Complete OCD level attention to detail in building that cabinet, and I imagine it would be nearly priceless to collectors.

There was an old man in my neighborhood back when I was a wee lad. He was an Old World cabinet maker and the pieces he turned out by hand were stunning.
