My 76 year old neighbor texts.
My 81 year old Dad texts..it is a common form of communication, embrace it or not.

My 87 year old MIL texts. One of her several great grandsons will test her multiple times a day to check up on her. They all (the great grandsons) communicate constantly via text and often know more about what is going on than their parents. She (MIL) still lives alone in her house. They all think it is really cool to have a great grandma that has an iPad and texts.

In our Porsche club region the board members often send a group text to discuss an issue, or a change in plans. Far easier and faster than email. Many times an email gets delayed for some reason but text is virtually instant.

I text all day long. Only the older folks call.

Almost daily with sub contractors and some clients. I hate text but my subs get the message so they don't forget. The only great thing about that is for addresses and phone numbers. I text my wife only when necessary but almost never text the kids.

I hate group text. I have a client that's doing that now. We are in the process of planning on working on their parent's grand old house. Three siblings and myself. Everything they talk, I have to see it or included. They wanted it that way but there's personal issues at play here but I want nothing to do with it. This has been going back and forth for a couple weeks now. I have to ask them to stop or cut me out and tell me after they hash thing out on their own. PITA

You know when you are not a pro at texting? I bet everything I got on this one that all of you text with only one of your index finger. I do and a young, teenager I think, laughed at me and said," why do old people text with only one finger?" I started to noticed that too. I tried the two thumbs methods. What a disaster? It was suppose to be, 12:30 for a lunch meeting instead, I want to jump into bed with your wife at 12:30.:D What a mess.

Texting definitely has a place in the varied methods of communication we now have available. In many ways, it’s superior to phone calls. In others, it falls short. I find that 90% of phone calls, (at least), can be accomplished by a short text.

Long texts do suck. If something requires many questions and answers, a short phone call is better. The beauty of a text conversation is the written record of what each person said/typed. I sometimes need to go back and refresh my memory of what I said, much less the other person.

The biggest beauty of text is that you do not have to answer the instant that someone is trying to contact you, like a phone call. You can answer or continue the conversation in 10 minutes, an hour or never. When I’m driving and someone texts me an address, I touch it and it opens in maps. A couple more easy taps on touch screen and I’m being led there by GPS. I use it constantly, every day of my life. Even when I’m on the phone w someone, they are frequently texting me links or addresses. I don’t have to remember schit like appointments, (or remember to write them down later), they are right there in a text conversation.

Anyone who doesn’t understand texting or thinks that it’s the same as email is 3000 years old, basically. Most people under 50 will not answer their phones, ever, unless a call has been agreed on via text. :)

I text but I refuse to have a conversation over text. So for info or a quick "I'm on my way" it's great.

If my kids send me a text asking a question I call them and guess what, they often don't answer. :rolleyes:
I've been dumped via text. I tried calling the lady as soon as I got the text and guess what, she didn't answer... lol

A few years back the place I worked for disabled text messaging in an effort to save money and guess what happened... $$$$$. 3 months later they switched text messaging back on. :D

You lose. I text w thumbs and it’s no issue. And I’m old. Practice makes perfect. I remember texting w a friend back in the early 2000s, when I was still on a Blackberry and said friend was a slightly younger guy raised on video games. He drove a new at the time 997 and he would respond to texts while driving so fast that it was seriously instantaneous. I once texted him, “HTF are you doing this?” The reply came instantly, “because I can.”

FWIW, I avoid texts while driving unless I’m on an empty highway and then keep them brief.

The only time I text and drive is with Siri. She reads them and I dictate them. And it is rare at that. Only if very important, and I keep my eyes on the road.

Yes, much more convenient than the phone since so many people just let the phone go to voicemail.

I'll get a text while driving, and return with a call. The first thing always is: "Why didn't you just text me back?". I'm driving. Bad thing to do while driving and against the law.

I do like the feature on my phone where I can put off an incoming call with a "Standard Text". aka I'll call you back.

On top of that, telephone calls can come at inopportune times or may not be so important that you have to interrupt what someone else is doing, especially since you probably don't know what exactly they are doing. So a text is quick and simple.

Texts can even be used for things like "hey, I'd like to give you a call (to discuss something that's not so important that we need to talk now if you're in the middle of something), let me know when it's convenient for you."
