The interior of my kayak smells like.....

Whoa! I opened up the hatch to feel around and plan my wire routing strategy for the fish finder.

A kayak being 100% watertight is an illusion. I must have had a teaspoon of water inside from climbing in and out. I dried it up, best I could but holy kamolee! It smells like a dirty moist gym locker room. Nasty. It’s the perfect environment for mold. Hot, dark, MOIST!

Going from one body of water to another, I will be subjected to quagga mussel inspection checkpoints. My boat needs to be dry. Plus I dint want to spread that around. We all know how I feel about invasive species. ( I’m looking at you bamboo!).

What do you think? Ducted fan? Run a flex hose into the dark confines and push air thru? Like the utility companies venting a confined space?

Right now I have a small desk-fan inserted up into the hatch. Moving air should help.

Friend of mine leaves the hatches open when he stores his and keeps a spray bottle of bleach water nearby and gives them a spray after each outing- seems to do the trick.

I am disappointed. I just knew the kayak was going to smell like fish and there would be a picture of Vash holding up a 10 lb bass.

If you are concerned about black mold, bleach may kill, but Borax is forever...That is what was supposed to be used on timber framing post flood.

I would think drying it out and leaving the hatches open during storage should do the trick. Another thing I did with my kayak was wash it down with fresh water and spray the hardward with WD-40. I exclusively used it in the ocean though.

Sani-94 or ZEP-7. They have a hospital grade one that comes in a 20-gallon drum and is VERY strong.

I mean, you ain't gonna do it, but that's what I would use. Bleach is good if you want to make a WWI chemical bomb.

This oscillating up in the overturned kayak appears to be working.

Just the tiniest of air movement is making a difference. Die mussel larvae!

You can also buy desiccant drying packs that help suck up the moisture. I use them in my boat during the winter.
