ebay and/or Amazon has refilled cartridges available at a very reasonable cost.

EDIT: Weird, I certainly don't remember it being more than $100... just saw this refurbed one on Amazon:

Hahahah. When you got it, it may have been. Now it's a "classic".

One of the brothers in $199 new, but you can pay $239 for a "renewed" version.

The renewed market has the same model that I have that's dying for $209. It's a Laserjet 2025dn. I think it's got to be years old.

I'm putting it on Bring a Trailer... maybe it will bring $300 or more.

I’m a big fan of Brother. We have four of them, 1 BW multifunction, 2 color multifunction, 1 color, all laser. Toner is reasonably priced, printers are durable, drivers seem troublefree. I’d get the multifunction because being able to photocopy and scan is handy.

I've never had issues with Brother. I like it much better than HP.

Being a Mac user, the biggest problem is the interface software tho. Older printers are a PITA with newer Mac software.

Yeah, printer integration is not as smooth as the rest of the Mac experience. But OP is going to get a new printer so it’ll be fine. I recall I went to Brother because some other printer brand didn’t play well with Macs, that was ten years ago.

Buying a mono doesn’t save much money over a color model. Just set defaults to print in mono - or heck use color, for how little OP prints. Then when you need to print color for some reason, it’s there. It might be hard to find a mono with duplex.

That's what I was suspecting, but surprisingly, it's not. It's almost harder to find a printer that DOESN'T do duplex.

Color laser printers are MUCH larger because they've got to have room for 4 toner cartridges. Otherwise I might go the color route again. But monochrome is cheaper and smaller. I think the only time I'd print in color was at Christmas. I'll get by on monochrome.

I ended up getting the HL-L2395dw above, "renewed" for $119. Seems good so far. Setup was pretty easy. It's got the color touchscreen plus web interface. It seems to print well and plays well with our Macs.

I just tossed my old HP. It weighed 50+# Of course, it was more of a small office workhorse printer with a monthly page volume of 40,000 sheets and a recommended volume of 750-2500 sheets or something like that so it's not really an apples to apples comparison. But this one is smaller, lighter, faster and more advanced due to probably close to 10 years of advances.

My old HP was pretty plug-n-play. I gave the our Mac's the IP, and it found the printer, and gave us a few options. One of the options (the default of course) was crap, but I think the other two PCL and PostScript worked well.

For the new brother, I went and downloaded the drivers/apps from the brother website, and followed the instructions and that seems to have worked OK. I did notice in the documentation that it said that the "CUPS" driver was preferred, and when it came up, Mac wanted to use Air Print. I selected CUPS, and that seems to be working well.

I’ve used nothing but Brothers laser for years and years
We have at least 8 in use, and they don’t fail
Cartridges cheap on eBay, and 98% of them are perfect.

I just got a wireless , with a full a toner from Amazon for 119..

That's great to hear. My HPs were also long lived and trouble free. Hell, this one may have died from lack of use for the past 6+ years.

I hope I have the same experience with this new one. I'm not sure how many pages the toner that I got with mine is going to print. I'm assuming it's the "introductory toner and will only be 500 or 1500 pages or something like that, but I don't care. It'll take me a while to go through it, and I have the setting flipped so that when it thinks it's empty, it'll keep printing. My experience has been that's usually quite a bit more printing.

Why the hell don't the companies use the same toner cartridge across their product line?

Another vote for the Brother wireless for $100.
Mine is 8 years old, and works perfectly.

Cost, size, packaging and expected use?
If your printer is the size of 2 loaves of bread and intended for home use, you can probably get away with a small toner cartridge that'll print a few thousand pages which might last you months.

If your printer is the size of a small refrigerator in a business expecting to possibly print a few thousand sheets or maybe tens of thousands of sheets per month, then you may want a larger cartridge that will last more than a few days.

This. I switched to Brother for all my printers and they are great. More reliable and less expensive than Canon.
