We had one an autocross recently. I was the one releasing each car and it was almost comical how tiny the car is, and the wheels look like toys compared to all the modern cars that were there. Camaros and Mustangs with 20s and 21 inch wheels are just huge after a Mini rolls through.

Many years ago when I had my 911, i drove past one on the freeway on the way home from work. The 911 is pretty small, but it felt like a giant as I drove past the mini.

These days, there's an apt complex not far from me that has an old fiat 500 that parks near the entrance, often with balloons tied to it on the weekends. Those are also very small cars.

The owner is asking $10 G and he will probably get it or close to it. $8500 might take it.

I had 3 new ones way back when, (3 between my wife and I). They were wonderful little cars.

I drove one once that was set up for the track on which it was probably great. Around here you just crashed around potholes. Still a ton of fun.

My friend picked up this 79 RHD Mini a few months ago. Upgraded with the 1.3 motor. A hoot to drive on the back roads .

I remember at local races in the 60 and 70's Cooper S minis would put the fear of geebus in the guys with bigger racecars, Corvettes especially, because the Minis would usually blow the doors off the vettes,. The twistier the tracks the better the Coopers went. In particular the racetrack at Debert, NS had a whoper amount of Minis there.

I seem to recall the Cooper S had a 1275 cc engine twin carbs and enough HP to outduel a lot of cars, and would run the 1/4 mile in about 14-15 secs, but was on rails at most tracks especially if the driver knew what he was doing. Those were the days.

Don't OK boomer me!

Back in the early 1980s we had a guy autocrossing in a mini. He was never very fast becasue he was a large man. It looked like a circus act when we climbed out of it.

He finally traded it for a Corvette. A vett is hardly a big car, but it was way heavier, and had a ton more horse power. He started getting competitive. then.

Same basic thing Porsche did. Build small, light weight cars that go around corners.

I suspect those mini racecars may have been modified. I was curious, so I checked, and per wikipedia, from introduction until the year 2000 could be had with 850, 1000, 1100 and 1275cc motors. They started way back in the day with the 850cc motor with 33hp, and the '64 Cooper S has 76hp (which was probably a lot of fun on the street in a car that size). I've driven small cars (but not that small) with 52hp (wasn't fun) and 78-82hp (could be fun-ish). I suspect a car much smaller with that same power and much better handling was probably a ton of fun.

I’ve had two - a 79 mini 1000 in the 80s during HS. And in the 90s had a 68 Cooper S.
Where is that red car for sale?

I've raced, rallyed, daily driven Cooper S's for years. The 998 was the best engine as it could be revved higher than the 1275, but it was peaky HP
Most of mine were 1275's and with the twin 1 .25 Su carbs made for a fun street car that was somewhat quick, and handled tight curves like a leech. The race car had a weber and 1293 displacement.
Running at open tracks like Willow Springs was BORING. A study in patience while you did not even brake for turn 1 once you got there. In the mountains it was really competitive , but that was illegal street racing
The engines are a little fragile when pushed hard and it takes some decent amount of bravado to send it on a tight road circuit with most often larger machinery on either side. The design is brilliant packaging. 10 feet long stem to stern. A popular hot rod deal is to put a V tec in it, but most people don't do it correctly and end up with torque steer out the wazoo.
One of these years, I'll get another one .

Lots of them for sale around here. but sadly they tend to be poorly maintained or cheaply (poorly) modified.
