In the future NONE of our cars will leak oil

Well. . . according to this article. For a price your classic car can be converted to electric with about a 300 mile range.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/electric-engines-give-classic-cars-a-recharge-11600282781

Likely the price will come down over time.

I love the idea of going electric but I don’t particularly like the idea of being dependent on the vulnerable and expensive electrical grid.

Solar charging station? Sure - sign me up!

I'm too pigheaded to even click the WSJ subscribe button to read the article, and you expect me to pull out a perfectly good engine and convert to electric?

Yea, the day I can put an electric motor in my 911 and still make a long drive down to Key West and recharge in the same time I can fill the tank with gasoline I will look into the system. It will have to be really inexpensive to convince me that it makes sense. And it will have to come with a really nice engine sound like the flat 6 has, and the conversion will have to weigh less than the current engine and transmission.

So only when some real physics magic has arrived. Maybe the extraterrestrials will teach us how.

I like the sound of an internal combustion engine too much to ever consider that.

I tried watching Randy Pobst run Pikes Peak in a Tesla, but got bored, and turned it off because of only hearing the rocks hit the fender wells !

They won't leak engine oil. They might still leak at the diff, the trans, and coolant, since almost all battery packs use some sort of coolant.

Just, no. No way I would ever alter any Porsche or anything desirable with taht.

Might as well buy a kit car to do that sort of thing to.

Bottom line, gasoline has a HUGE energy density. It is available almost everywhere, and it is cheap.

Electric cars are not charged with rainbows and unicorn farts.

If I commuted 25 or 30 miles per day (shudder) I would likely have some cheap electric commuter car. I don't and I won't.

If 914's were still dirt cheap (in the past I've bought 3 for less than a grand, running) an electric conversion would be a hell of a lot of fun. What was the most powerful 4-cyl 914, 90 HP?

95HP, at least mine was as a non California car. 0-60 is 9.9 seconds!

There is a show on Motortrend TV called Vintage Voltage. Some shop does electric conversions to old cars. They are usually happy to get "up to 200 miles" of range. and they did a 914. Silly expensive.

The guy in the tech board selling the electric AC systems for 911s was the customer. It is interesting, but it is just not quite ready for prime time in my book.

And in the future, we will all have flying cars!

And personal jet packs that have a 50 mile range!

And a personal robot to do your tedious chores.

I bumped my 2 liter 914 up to about 175 hp, it cost me $300 to do it but I dint have to plug it into anything.
Now if they came up with an electric supercharger for 911s ...... that would be something!

I have driven a 914-6 with a hot 2.7 engine in it. It was fun. It made a LOT of noise and no one would ever think it was electric.
