Welcome to Texas

Driving cross country from LA. Made it into Texas only to get snowed in at a closed Valero gas station 60 miles west of Amarillo. Not alone though. There’s about two dozen other motorists camping here also.

This is going to be a long cold night.

Ouch! Welcome to our warm southern state. You'll love the weather.

Being trapped in the gas station will be the highlight of your next 4 hours of driving. You do have Cadillac Ranch coming up on your left.

That sucks. Hope your delay is as short and comfortable as possible.

FWIW, one should always assume that it's snowing in Amarillo. At least is was every time I've driven through. Even in July. Not kidding.

Weird weather out there.

It also could have been worse. If you had gone I-10, you would have been stopped by a Hurricane near New Orleans.

I love TX... always have. My experiences with Amarillo are different - hotter’n hades every time I’ve been there! I think it was almost 90 when I went for a run one morning (this was a few years back). It was just after sunrise and already up to 100 when I got back!

Still... there’s something about the place I like.

When you finally get out of Texas and into Oklahoma you will see the trees are just smashed. We are recovering from a mega ice storm and the trees and all just sad looking.

Why would anyone go to Oklahoma from Texas? Clearly, that would never happen unless they were lost.

We sat at the Valero station for a couple hours. It stopped snowing about midnight. just about the time the power went out. A road crew came thru about 2am with snow plows and cleared the access road and I could see traffic on the 40 headed east although they were only doing about ten mph. I figured slow was better than stopped so I joined the parade. I made it about ten miles before they completely closed the highway. Traffic was stopped right in their tracks. Things started to move again at 6am. It was one very long night.
I blew thru Texas as fast as I could after all that. I wanted to get back on schedule. All things considered it took me almost 16 hours to cross the pan handle.
Oklahoma was nice. I didn't see the freeze carnage I was expecting but I did very little sightseeing.
Sitting in Little Rock, Ark. tonight. I'm hoping to get caught up on my sleep. Tomorrow will be the last leg of this trek. Roswell Georgia.

My original plan was to come across the on the 10. I changed my mind literally the morning I left because I wanted to avoid any hurricane activity.

New highway construction across the entire state. It will be great when they're finished.

I always liked Roswell. We lived nearby in Dunwoody.
