A cheap but unusual driver?

Being auctioned now.

https://www.autoblog.com/2020/11/06/1988-merkur-scorpio-auction/

According to the selling dealer, this incredibly well-preserved Scorpio, for sale right now on the auction site Cars&Bids, is believed to have been awarded to a Ford employee as a bonus when new (which is why Ford Motor Company is shown as the original owner). The seemingly ungrateful recipient evidently didn't drive it much, and it next ended up with a collector in Tennessee. When that collection was liquidated, this dealer acquired it at auction. Mileage stands at just over 19,000 miles. Finished in Tuscany Gold with Spice Brown leather, it appears now just as it did in 1988, when Ford's yuppie dream was still alive.

Wow, I'd almost totally forgotten about those cars. In fact I couldn't picture one in my head. I hardly remembered even after looking at the site.

I had one
handled well for a 4 door sedan good anti lock brakes [early]
v6 was gutless as were most at the time
nice soft leather seats and trim

but the poor car keep getting hit when stopped at stop signs
worst one a lady ran the opposite sign hit a BMW then hit my merkur hard
oddly for miami she had good ins that paid me more then I paid for the car

the little 2 door 4 banger xr4 ? or something was a lot sporty -er then the bigger scorpio
had an early turbo pinto motor like the SVO mustang

The XR4Ti was the car of choice among a certain sort of character when I was in college.

I had a XR4Ti. Great car. Sold it with 140K miles. Followed a 911 back in 1986 on autoroute 40 from Quebec to Montreal doing 120 traffic permitting the whole way.

I never drove, but heard good things about the XR4Ti. I don't remember ever hearing anything about the Scorpio

My friend bought an XR4Ti brand new with a seven year extended warranty. He said that one sale almost bankrupted his dealer....

I remember hearing that the XR4Ti was a great driving car but it was nearly impossible to get parts. Definitely advanced compared to other cars if the Ford lineup at that time.

Had an xr4i. It was a nice driving car, not real powerful but a good hit of boost. Comfy seats.

I once had a 1.6 Sierra.. defo not a bad car, bit to heavy
but it went well for a 1.6Liter petro.. Good top speed on Highway
but gutless for low range acceleration
learned the "going sideways" with it.

looks exactly like the one I had
- the fancy wheels
and the rear spoiler
and the brake cooling duct
and the fancy paint and stickers
and the cabin air sucker on the roof
and the roll cage
and the side exhaust
and the mudflaps

other then that, it's a spitting image

oh yeah, and mine didn't have the power to go sideways on dry tarmac

Fun thread, totally forgot about the XR4i. Never owned one but did a test drive from a dealership I believe someone on Miramar road. The exterior looked better in person than pictures and I remember thinking man I wish I could afford one of these. The interior was really comfortable and the turbo gave a nice boost. Had a very non-USA car feel to it.
