Women Only Pistol Class

A friend of mine asked me if I would host a women's only pistol class on my farm, taught by a certified instructor.

After some homework, and the fact that my wife wanted to attend, I agreed. There are many things on the "do not attempt to teach your wife" list; one of them is teaching her how to shoot.

Nope.

The class was an all day affair, with class room work in the morning (I had comfortable barn space for everyone), initial range time, lunch (everyone brought food for the cook out, then an afternoon session.

There were seven woman in the class, the limit, and each woman shoot over 250 rounds. Interesting note, when I called my neighbors to let them know about the amount of shooting that was going to take place, we had requests from another eight women that wanted to attend the class! A second class will be held in the Spring.

I gussied up and expanded my range and had a local range Marshall come out and take a look. All good.

The class was a big hit with my wife. She is not a gun person in any sense and really appreciated how the instructor built on basics, the fundamentals. The feedback from all the woman was extremely positive.

I only attended the final 20 minute session back in the barn for certificate awards, etc. Great day. My wife was stoked. I highly recommend the experience.

Brass was picked up after every range session!

Sounds like a great day and nice of you to host it. When I "taught" my wife to shoot she picked up my .38 and all six shots were a tight group center mass on her first try. Needless to say I have since tried to avoid pissing her off.

All 9mm or smaller, almost all Glocks.

I am not sure what caliber the lady with the revolver on the right is shooting.

What a great idea , proper training is essential for safe gun ownership . When everyone is at the same level ( basic/entry ) there is a thirst to learn . Hopefully these ladies will continue to hone their skills and continue to be responsible gun owners and spread the message . I also hope none of them are ever in a situation where using the weapon is needed . Great job !!!

That’s awesome.

I wish I could legally do that in Canada.

I am only allowed to shoot my restricteds (pistols and black guns) at a range or from my porch due to our stupidly conceived and poorly written laws.

Well done! My wife attended one of these at our club many, many years ago. I gave it to her as a birthday present. Because, well, you are absolutely right - no man should ever teach his wife (or girlfriend, or sister) to shoot. And yes, there are a lot of jokes surrounding that, but studies have indicated there really is a substantial barrier to learning if there is any kind of a "relationship" between the man and the woman. It's weird. And, having taught NRA pistol classes many moons ago, I'm here to tell you that women always make better students than men. Always. As long as the male teacher has no personal relationship with them.

He was excellent. I spent some time with him before the day got started and was very comfortable. He basically paraphrased what you wrote, Jeff. I had no idea.

He ran the gamut with them: Basics, holsters, how to pull a gun in stress, etc.; all done in a calm, reassuring manner that didn't leave any of the seven women behind the curve. He, according to my wife, "listened".

I'm domed

There were two women that had never held a gun before the class. They were beyond effusive. "I can do this".

Just an interesting day.

This sounds like CCW classes being held constantly since Spring of this year around here. TN requires 8 hours of instruction including range time and then a qualifying shoot in order to have CCW that has reciprocity in other states.. Some ranges have Women only classes and they are always booked with a waiting list.

An armed and well trained woman is less likely to be a victim.

i think ladies really appreciate the semi-private nature of that. no good ol boys pointing and laughing, no mall ninjas comparing 'tactical' toys. well done.

Our South Bay Rod and Gun Club has the NRA Women on Target sessions and since i was a certified federal government instructor many years ago I teach the 4 hour black powder session and it is a huge hit.

The only thing I would note is the flag girl has her thumb crossed and will hurt herself when she shoots a semi-auto if that was not corrected.

Sounds like they learned a lot. 250 rounds is a fair amount in center-fire sized rounds.

If she is correct, then at least you know she learned her stuff!

When a group of us friends wanted to all get our CCW permits, we invited a certified trainer over to the house and did much the same thing with a carry in lunch, and an afternoon session at the instructor's range. Two women in the group had never touched a gun, and were somewhat intimidated/scared by them.

The neat thing is, by the end of the day, they were both proficient with a .22, and 9 mm, and also fired my .45 ACP several times, and enjoyed the "boom".

Exactly what I heard at the closing session, the only one I attended. The instructor asked each woman for feed back and the were simply proud of themselves for getting past their apprehension.

Neat thing is, my wife wants a holster for Christmas!

The best I can get with Mrs. Lee is for her to just hit the damned paper. I got her a Walther P-22 many years ago and I just cannot figure out how to teach her. The gun is small and has zero recoil. I can draw pictures on a target with that gun. Jriera (RIP) took us to his range in Vegas long ago and got her shooting well. But it didn't take. I know she'll never commit to taking a class.
