ceiling fan wattage regulator?

Brain trust, I am sick and tired of the flickering lights in my kids study room. They almost never turn on the light, because they aren't old like me. They see like a cat.

What the heck if this regulator for? Its only hooked up to the lights but nothing to the fan motor? Is that what its celled, regulator? I have power going into it, but nothing coming out, so its deal. My thinking is, I will run two small LED lights into those sockets, the candle looking type bulb off the shelves. Why the heck do I need this dumb thing? What's it regulating? Lawyers want it on there to help my me to have a better, safer life?

Lights should work fine with a rheostat. Motors not so much. They like stepped current (or voltage, not sure which). I can't help you much beyond that.

You can buy a new one for about $20.

...or just remove it.

Old light controllers don't like LED bulbs. They need higher current to work.

Edit: Apparently that was added to limit lights to 190 watts - thank the 2005/2009 energy code.

You probably don't need it.

If you remove it, you should probably make a label of something to put inside the shade or somewhere discrete indicating that LE bulbs must be used (or a total of less than the 300W yours was rated at) for the next owner.
