Summary: It is a BIG BLACK HOLE of knowledge. To date. COVID has killed almost 5x that of US casualties in Vietnam. Wow.

There also are long term health issues - physical and mental that don't seem to be accounted for.

My opinion? We need to be careful. VERY careful.
Les Paul. Sincere condolences.

I wrote about this early in the piece, March i think, but its worth repeating. My parents live in a retirement community. Their nearest neighbours, two sisters, fit and well in their mid 70s had travelled to San Paulo to pick up an Antartic cruise when the kaka hit the fan. Never got on the ship, returned home and both tested positive for Corona. Both healthy, same genetics, same exposure- the elder was dead in a week, the younger got no more than a cold.

There could be no funeral, my mother described how many residents of the community gathered outside to sing and hold signs and flowers in the road for the surviving sister, who sat in her window.

There's charts around comparing # US Covid deaths to # deaths from Vietnam War, Civil War, WW2, etc.

The thing not captured is how quickly Covid has racked up #250,000. It has taken just 9 months to kill 250,000 Americans.

The Civil War killed about 500,000, but took four years to do so. WW2 killed about 400,000, but also took 4 years. Vietnam killed about 60,000, but took about 9 years.

Covid is killing Americans at a faster pace than any other major cause - other than the 1918 pandemic (about 675,000 in about 1.5 years).

Our population is also much higher now than it was for any of the other events. As a percentage of population, coronavirus barely registers compared to the others.

Got my second test results back today and it was negative.

Strangely, I had chills starting late yesterday and turned on the heat when I got home. Was cold when I went to sleep at 11 and woke up at 3 am. Couldn’t go back to sleep. Ate cereal at 7, took a sleeping pill, back to bed and was out to 1 pm. Feel great now.

I don't know about the early wave idea. There was a nasty something respiratory going around last Thanksgiving, some other flavor of flu maybe.

Wash your hands and don't touch your face. Put lotion on your hands and feet. All the soap and hand sanitizer will dry you out. Dried out skin can crack. Skin is your first line of defense against everything. Get in the habit of washing your hands first thing when get home

Put lotion on your elbows too, you ashy MFer

Rocket, glad to hear you’re on the mend.

People forget (or more likely never knew) that every year, every week, more than 50,000 people die in the US of all causes anyway. It’s a big country- we lose 2.7M a year on average, 1.9M of which are over 65. The COVID panic purveyors rarely provide any context to the daily fatality numbers, but it’s helpful to know. 5,200 65+ year olds die everyday without COVID. How many people know that 2020 is likely to only average about 10% higher in total deaths?

What a silly straw man argument. Show me where I said it was nothing.

It’s an emotional subject. I get it. And I live in NY and do know people who died from it. For all I know, I’ll get it and might be one of them.

My point is that the public grossly misunderstands the risk and the death rate. Most believe it is 10 times to 100s of times more deadly. And even with both of those things being true, I take some comfort in data. Do a little experiment and ask someone what the case fatality rate is.
As an example:

Sorry I posted.

My best friends mother in law died from Covid. Her dad survived COVID but basically gave up on life. He died last Friday.

So did my friend lose both parents to Covid or just 1?
