Pray Your Fridge Doesn’t Die

Not quite 4 year old LG compressor died last Saturday, after making it 9 months on a replaced compressor. Local LG repair shop not only tells us that compressors are months out but that they are no longer replacing them because the incredible number of call backs are making their business look bad. Their recommendation? Buy a new fridge that’s not an LG.....

So the wife starts shopping around and there’s nothing in stock even close to what we are looking for, which is basically anything decently sized in black stainless. Nothing in Wichita at any appliance store, nothing in any surrounding towns, and everything is 12+ weeks out. For a freaking fridge! I ended up having to drive 2.5 hours to OKC to buy one which was the last one they had. Freaking crazy.

Can they put in a non LG compressor? Possibly a Danfoss that can be made to fit.

A friend of mine just went through this trying to find a chest freezer.

Out of stock everywhere, and used ones selling for more than the were new.

Are you certain it's the compressor? I just replaced the relay on my compressor and voila, fridge works again!

Believe so, the symptoms were the exact same as the last time. Slow loss of temperature and cooling until it’s at ambient.

What year was it made ?

I have a 2008 Kenmore Elite, still working fine.

There's this ...

LG Electronics has reached a settlement deal for a LG refrigerator class action lawsuit to resolve claims that the company’s refrigerators stopped cooling due to a compressor defect.

According to the settlement motion, about 1.5 million consumers could receive cash payments and extended warranty coverage.

The Settlement Class includes anyone in the U.S. who bought one of the covered models of LG Electronics refrigerators produced between Jan. 1, 2014 and Dec. 31, 2017.

Don't buy Lucky Goldstar or Samsung, for anything.

There was a time when Lucky Goldstar made great, cheap computer monitors and Samsung made great VCRs, but literally everything that I have bought from either has failed prematurely.

My Samsung fridge does not make ice unless I thaw the icemaker with a hair dryer once a month.

My Samsung DLP television had the red LED die because of inadequate cooling.

My Samsung Blu Ray player would play roughly 20% of the Blu Rays we put in it.

My Samsung oven had the knobs fall off.

My Samsung receiver had the capacitors leak out after one year.

My LG television stopped turning on after 2 years (just died).

I feel like Korean consumer products are subpar in quality but seem attractive at purchase time because they usually contain one more feature than similarly priced items.

I found a used appliance place this year and bought a 20 year old refurbished GE fridge for the garage with a 2 year warranty for $150. Might I suggest seeing if you can find a place like that to get you by for a little while?

Found a new one, hence the 2.5 hour drive. A Samsung but at least it was cheap! Wifey doesn’t mess around with not being able to cook meals for the family.

I hate that modern refrig are basically disposable. We have had to replace 3 or 4 items on our 4 yo Whirlpool.

I had no idea freezers were so hard to come by these days. I went to the local home depot a few weeks ago and was confused why there were none on display.

I finally asked somebody and got the lowdown. He said they still get them in stock they just go fast. He managed to locate something in the back that was close enough for our needs.

Since Ive never bought a stand alone freezer, I was also quite shocked that they can build and ship quite a huge mechanical contraption for less than 300$ (Chinese made of course).

Washers and dryers are the same. We purchased a home in July and it took us 2 months to source them.

Bought a washer dryer set two months ago and had no problem with stock here in MN, I insisted they be US made, so got Whirlpool.

I frankly can’t figure out why a fridge “has” to have a screen and all kinds of other crap- it just needs to keep food at the correct temp.

My business partner went through some of that a year ago. He is lucky in that he has a garage beer fridge, and got by with that for a while. All the new fridges are INSANE expensive, and not reliable at all. Many of them need some propitiatory water filter for the ice make, that cost 70 to 90 bucks every few months.

In the end, he used a saddle tap to connect into his refrigerant line, and topped up the charge. His same old fridge is working great now.

In the past 15 years I have replaced;
2 LG refg
1 LG microwave
1 LG a/c unit
1 LG dishwasher
The GE refg is not making ice. Mother board is out and NLA
I would not take any LG product even if free.

2 year old LG fridge and on my 2nd compressor too.
Freezer doesn't get cold enough to freeze ice cream but meats are ok.
Bottom ice maker quit about 13 months in.
Piece of crap.
No LG in my house ever again.
Fortunately we have several fridges in the house.

Is that a french door Samsung fridge? You have to caulk the seam on the outside wall of the ice maker compartment on some and another is the fridge will leak if it is level.

I have a Kenmore Elite french door fridge (made by LG) and it's a total POS.

I have been slowly changing over our appliances to all Bosch Benchmark Series. They are quite expensive but very well made. Very impressed w/ them so far.

Still have the Kenmore/LG fridge...mostly b/c it was almost a $4000 fridge in 2011, but has been a total POS since new. I've probably bought $1500 in parts for it in 10 years...same stuff over and over breaks due to poor design.

Also, we ordered a GE upright freezer in early September. Last known delivery date is mid December.

And all the fridges seem to be in stainless steel now. Finding a white appliance is much harder.
