I have become thin skinned – literally!
Just another curse of getting old, the skin on your hands gets quite thin. I use lots of hand lotion, but that only marginally helps prevent scrapes and cuts. Yesterday, while pulling the seat off of my Norton, which is always a battle, I scraped my hand against the backseat rail and literally took off a quarter size piece of skin. Bled like a stuck pig. 10 years ago it probably would not have even left a bruise.
So what’s the answer? What are you guys that are in the over 60 group doing to prevent these kind of injuries? I suppose I could wear mechanics gloves all the time.

I'm not over 60 yet but seem to have inherited the family history of thin skin and easy bleeding. I've taken to wearing gloves for just about any kind of real work.

My father had thin skin in his older age, & I was not looking forward to it. That happened quite some time ago for me. I was complaining to my dermatologist about the ratty, flacky, spotted skin on my forearms. He recommended Amlyctin, which has lactic acid, as a topical remedy. Of course it didn't thicken my skin, but it really made a difference in the appearance. I should try it on the rest of my body. It has a strong smell of cat pee for a brief time after application.

Just wait until you've been placed on a blood thinner to prevent clots. Yep, old age is just gangs of fun!

Bob, yes. I got the first bottle from Walmart, then I found it at Costco - a bigger bottle at a better price.

Wait until you have to use Efudex.
Dermatologists will give it to you for sun spots that could turn cancerous at a later date. My face looked like a speckled trout. |

Don't get a cat, or make sure it's declawed!
As my dad aged, his skin became almost translucent. And while his kitty "Scooter" was alive, Scooter would scratch the crap out of his hands and forearms. My dad didn't care though because Scooter was what he had and was more important. So he endured all the scratches and bleeding.

For me, it is martial arts practice with my big dog. He loves it, but every so often a tooth snags my forearm.

I used to see blotches on my grand parents in their 80’s and thought, eww. Now I’m in my early 60’s and my hands/arms scratch, bruise and bleed like the Exxon Valdez.
My forearms are all scarred up from working on cars, planes, life, etc. My son says they look manly. Last edited by A930Rocket; 11-30-2020 at 07:33 PM.. |

Get off my lawn!

Same thing here. Way too many years of sun exposure. I spent many years in Hawaii in the 1960s running around with no shirt and no shoes. Now the top sides of my arms will rip open with little bumps or abrasions. The bottom side of my arms does not do that, just the side that got the most sun exposure.
My brother carries 5 or 6 band aids with him in his wallet at all times. He always seems to have a band aid on his arms. I tease him that I remember when he carried a condom in his wallet, now he carries a first aid everywhere.

no thanks. when i lived in el paso..i became friends with the old man across the street. his hand-skin was like tissue paper. i watched him hook his hand on a nail he used to hang things..it cut and peeled back the back of his hand like cutting phillo dough..i screamed and applied pressure. it was a gusher, he said it didnt hurt and took the entire event in stride. i on the other hand - i almost fainted. it was the first time seeing such thin skin. i will wear gloves...damn. my senior years look brutal.

I'm a fan of the cut-resistant gloves available these days. The lighter ones are grippy, comfortable, and thin enough to maintain most dexterity. The only down side is that most lack fluid resistance.
