https://www.civilbeat.org/2016/01/death-in-paradise-is-all-too-frequent-for-visitors-to-hawaii/ Since July 2012, at least 147 visitors — nearly one a week on average — have died in Hawaii from injuries suffered while doing common tourist activities like swimming, snorkeling, hiking and going on scenic drives. There are signs around Waikiki beach for the tourists. Apparently it is a thing. Out away from tourist areas you won't see these signs. But then again, tourist deaths in general is a thing there. They leave common sense on the mainland when they go on vacation. I lived there (thanks to the Army) and it was almost a weekly, if not bi-weekly, occurrence. Sadly. ![]()

NY Governor Comoros quote “ Cuomo acknowledged businesses will be forced to close; families will face severe financial strain — and he announced a 90-day moratorium on all commercial and residential evictions to try and ease the immediate burden. But if all of these measures save just one life, the governor said, they are worth it.”
Stats, 302k USA Covid deaths. From March 23rd CDC Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including more than 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day. On average, smokers die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers. We can shut down the economy, destroy small businesses to save one life from Covid, yet we’re not concerned about almost 500k annual tobacco related deaths. Irony? If NY is so concerned about saving lives why is cigarette sales and smoking legal? 302k USA Covid deaths, yet

COVID doesn’t pay tax in NY. Cigarettes do. Lots and lots of tax.

I looked through the list twice. How'd I miss it?
I wonder where the cause of death fit in for old folks who just kind of fade away. My father and father-in-law both just faded away. No Alzheimer's, no dementia, no heart disease. Just wore out.

Note that the link from PO (CBS news) is about the 2017 data. CBS now reports that Covid is leading cause of death in the USA as of December 5 https://www.cbsnews.com/news/covid-19-leading-cause-of-death-united-states-this-week/
From their article: "COVID-19 was ranked as the leading cause of death in the U.S. this week, with 11,820, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. That's more than the number of Americans who died from ischemic heart disease (10,724), tracheal, bronchus and lung cancer (3,965), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (3,766)." The last "official" mortality tally is 2018 data. CDC says leading causes of death in USA in 2018 were: Heart disease: 655,381 Cancer: 599,274 Accidents (unintentional injuries): 167,127 Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 159,486 Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 147,810 Alzheimer’s disease: 122,019 Diabetes: 84,946 Influenza and Pneumonia: 59,120 Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis: 51,386 Intentional self-harm (suicide): 48,344

The great news is we now have a couple of vaccines for Covid-19. There is no vaccine for the rest of the list.

I can't believe that there are people in the U.S. still trying to downplay the seriousness of Covid19. Hasn't made it to your small town yet? It will.

I doubt anyone is downplaying it much. It has changed everyone's way of life. I did not even have Covid in mind when I started the thread. I just thought it was interesting how many way people die, like coconuts killing people. We all know heart disease is a major killer, and smoking is a major cause of that.

I didn't think anyone died of Alzheimer's. I always thought it was a condition you had (like arthritis, etc) when you died of something else.
