Thanks Capt. That is interesting. I have always loved the Porsche engineers that designed the 911 dry sump oil system when I am on the track puttering around in my slug slow old 85 911. I never give oil pressure a thought and check the gauge only on occasion. I remember the days of autocross and track days in my 914 and seeing the oil pressure light pop on in long corners.
No doubt Mercedes will have a lot of really smart people working on a solution. From what I gathered from the FP 1 & 2 the G- meters in the cars are calibrated for lateral movement and not for vertical moment. I just wonder how much vertical G they feel on those carousel - roller coaster corners. Do they all walk around with 60 pound weights on their helmets to strengthen their neck muscles? It must be brutal. |
Glen, the oil in a tank with the engine revving looks like the head of a pint of Guinness, advanced computational fluid dynamic 3D analysis using CAD data takes some of the guess work out but not all
All cars will record X (longitudinal), Y (lateral) and Z (vertical) loads, from memory 10G is used when calculating components/structures for bump ie Z loads and 6G for cornering ie Y loads I'm no Rain Man so could well be wrong. I'll ask a stress engineer friend and confirm back if you're interested Drivers do a lot of resistance strength work for building neck muscles |

Interesting race and congratulations to the winner . Good drive be Checo starting from the pits to getting points . Gasly another solid performance . If I was Bottas I would have held the throttle down !!!
|
This is why we love F1... What a track, giving a great impression of speed. The passes on the outside, the incredible chess game of 2 mercedes vs one red bull... Alonso nipping Sainz right at the end, Checo doing his best... Lovely... Too bad we didn;t ge ta Spa, but Zandvoort is one of my new favorites !

I also like Jensen Button and Nico Rosberg as color commentators. They bring great insight, and Nico has the guts to ask some difficult questions in the interviews.

F1 2021 thread
It is a good day to own a bar in Holland. There will be a lot of partying and drinking in Holland.
And a real good day for Heineken sales. |
My comment about Bottas was coming from the standpoint he only has a few races left with Mercedes IF the rumors are true . In that scenario screw team orders and push yourself the most you can . There are some that doubt that Bottas has the heart of a champion , I would say balls to the walls for the final races with the team . Just my opinion 😁
|
I 100% believe Bottas should have gone for fastest lap. His post race comments were fairly fictitious. He was going for it until James got on radio. He even asked if that was the purpose of the pit stop. If he is going to Alfa then do it. The team still gets the point and it's the team points that pay out.
The circuit was great and the Orange was incredible. The only thing I would change is adding length to the circuit. Ditto on Rossberg. He didn't hold back with Toto and seemed to make him uncomfortable. |
Talk about not holding back! Did I hear correctly that Rosberg, when at Williams, would just "go to the toilet" in the car? The Capt. talked about the weight of oil a few posts above, not only is this kinda gross but also would be a disadvantage for several laps (at least until the urine evaporated!)

So Mercedes figures by the public watching Hamilton win races with team orders that makes the public want to buy their vehicles?

The next domino in silly season has fallen .

It lowers the CG to let it out; advantage. And the work out one gets in a long race will have a driver already wet from sweat. In long stint endurance racing just letting it out is better. Especially if you get in a crash, think of all that fluid trying to force its mass in the directio of original momentum. |

Now that Bottas is in at Alfa
I hope he gains a lot of new fans and gets a car worthy of his talents and maybe a win or two. It's hard not to like a guy like Bottas, "long suffering" as he was at Mercedes.

The subject of relieving oneself while racing has come up before especially WRT stock cars and the looonnnnnggg Cup races. Almost all drivers consume all the water in the body that can be spared due to perspiration. But remember the cockpit in a stock car runs 135-140º during the race. I think F1 cars these days have less air circulating in there. At least I don't see any flexible fresh air hoses coming into their helmets.
Then there's the 4+ hour long stints in sports endurance cars. Again, a driver has to start hydrated but not with a belly full of water. Dr. Jerry Punch tells a story about Rusty Wallace having consumed a ham sandwich just be fore being strapped in. He had a massive roll over early on and wasn't breathing. Dr. Punch found a lot of the sandwich had been thrown back up into the throat and was blocking the air to his lungs and he passed out as a result. Lucky for RW that the good doctor figured that one out right there while they were cutting the belts. Otherwise, RW wasn't hurt. |

….. and hope Bottas has a better Alfa next year than this years car. I read somewhere they have put all resources to 2022 six months ago.

Do they think Russell will play nice as the #2 more so than Bottas? Attachment 10583 |

And it's official , Russell announced signing with Mercedes .
|
I think Russell will respect Hamilton and learn everything he can. Yes it will be one of those situations where the master is surpassed by the pupil. Then we will find out how much of a team player the multiple world champion is.
Having only some radio messages to go on, I feel Russell to be a better strategist. Best Les |
It will be interesting for sure. Man I really wanted Bottas to get that fastest lap.
|
Albon announced for Williams today.
|
The last couple of days at Monza look good on Bottas. Hope he gets to the front on Sunday.
|
Bottas has his work cut out for him starting last. How about McLaren starting 2nd and 3rd !!!
|
Nice win by Bottas.
Zhou is getting the 2nd seat at Alfa? Has anyone else heard confirmation of that? Feel badly for Gasly. Wonder when he first felt something wrong with his front wing. Did he already know down the straight after the chicane? Or did he only know once he was committed in the Curva Grande? |

I read an article on GP1 website that Aston Martin may be interested in Danny Ric to replace Vettel . Vettel has yet to sign for 2022 and supposedly has lost interest in F1 . McLaren has denied any contact has been made and Danny is firmly signed with them .
|
Both Alpha Tauri cars out by lap five .......... Ouch !
|
At least Max finished on top of Lewis that time. ;)
All Hail the Honey Badger! Best Les |
Entertaining race congrats to the winner . Great team results also . I am sure there will be a lot of chatter about " the crash " . Impressive drive by Bottas .
|
Nice drive for Bottas.
|
When they show a pic of the 3 tire compounds before the race/practice/qualy session, and it's on Eau Rouge or the banking of old Monza, how do they get the three tires to not roll down the incline?
|
A well-placed counterweight attached to the inside would accomplish that.
