Newbies Rant

I'm old. I no longer have ANY tolerance from newbies starting out here, especially those from out of the U.S. I'm tired of unsophisticated buyers b.tching about the costs of shipping, like I have ANY control (other than my 30% discount with FedEx) of what they charge. I'm tired of buyers getting all indignant over saying they want an item, and (MY mistake, I know) assuming they REALLY want it and I ship it out, as a favor, w/o giving them the price to ship and tell them AFTER I've taken the time to box it up, take it to the shipper, ship it, remember, they SAID they wanted it, and then give them the total and then they want to renegotiate the price. What's happened to common decency? I "thought" this community would be somewhat insulated from this type of behavior. Guess I was wrong. I know we all had to start somewhere. Maybe it was different when I joined up over 9 years ago? Well, because I'm old, or maybe because I'm not willing to waste my time anymore selling to newbies, I'm DONE selling to them. I don"t have to sell parts. I sure as hell don't do this for a living thankfully, and if I have something someone wants, I'll be happy to do so IF I recognize your username, or have dealt with you in the past or you've been around for more than 5 posts. I'm HAPPY to impart any knowledge I've gained through the years from here or the EarlyS, where I mainly hang out. Like I said, I'm old. Rant over......

I think you need to advise "shipping will probably be about $xxx amount" before you get that far along, especially when dealing with intl destinations.

I always assume every/any -one is an idiot until they prove otherwise, that way I'm not as irritated when I'm correct.

Then, when you take into account that so many folks are now used to Amazon Prime type shipping (free and 2 days) that having to wait a week or having to pay seems weird.

Then if you are selling items internationally or heavy or very large items, things just get uglier.

I'd like your full AP setup. I'll give you $200. That's fair right?

I recently saw a thing on the 'Net. It was a series of texts between folks selling (or in some cases giving away for free) items and dirtbags/morons trying to buy those items.

Some of them could be fake, but the cynic (realist) in me says that none of them were.

something like

Cat - free to a good home.

I'd like to talk money.

I'm giving the cat away for free to a good home.

Right, but I'm taking on responsibility for the cat, so I believe you should give me some money.

or

[COLOR="Red"]Are the hockey sticks and goal still available?[color]

[COLOR="Blue"]Yes, they are for $100. If you want them, you'll have to pick them up today because I'm going on vacation tomorrow.[color]

OK, I'll give you $40.

They are $100. If you want them and can pay that today, then I can meet you to exchange them.

Look, I'm DOING YOU A FAVOR by picking them up today, so I think you should give me a deal. If you don't sell them today, they'll just be sitting around while you are on vacation.

and it got even sillier from there on out.

Last but not least, this one must have been someone here on the board.

For Sale: guitar $250

Will you take $100?

Yes, I'll give you a special deal today, only $300

Hey, don't be like that. You're selling some used junk, and you'll be lucky to get $100. How about $150?

Absolutely, just for you, I'll sell it for $350.

Look, you probably won't sell your crap for $250. Then you'll be sitting around losing your job and not having enough money for food. You should be smart and take what you can now instead of ending up homeless.

I think part of the issue is that so many sites (i.e., Amazon) offer free shipping and the general public is starting to expect that everywhere they shop.

I would recommend padding the basic price and offer free shipping.

Also, just to make myself feel better, I have, in the past, sent the potential buyer demanding a deep deep discount, a photo of the item in the garbage can with a note stating I'd rather toss than get ripped off. I did this with a 944 automatic shift knob & leather boot which are very rare and hard to find. I was asking a very reasonable $50 but got constant lowball offers. The last guy wanted it for $15 and I sent him a photo of it in the garbage - and yes, I really did toss it.

I do most of my buying and selling of damn near anything on the adventure riders board. They seem to be a more realistic group of people. In the last few years I bought three motorcycles from individuals off of that board. Every one of the buying experiences was a real pleasure. Same thing with the motorcycles I have sold on there. No one trying to beat me up on the price.

I put up my S2000 for sale a couple years ago for 14k, Craigslist. Some young man actually met me, wave a roll of money, cash, in my face telling me he was serious. OK? His offer was 6000 cash. I was rolling on the floor laughing know my car is worth much more then 14k. Some people think just because they have money in hand other will bow down at their money.

Some middle eastern young men chased me down in their pick up truck just to offer to buy my 930. I rarely drive that thing, and said "No thanks. Its not for sale." Their reply was (thick accent)"Everybody's got price. Throw me price and I go bank. Cash, no bull siht". I have 52,000 miles on this thing. I shouted, 95,000 and you got a deal. They cuss me out and said I was crazy. "I give 20k cash money, in hundreds. Good deal for you". I smiled, light changed and left. Those bastard kept coming but I lost them using all of my 460 crank hp to get away from these nut jobs. People such. I have stories to tell with the housing market. Same thing, nuts.

Just what the hell are these people think they can accomplish by low balling? someone in distress?

When I advertise things locally, I usually get some bozo wanting to trade...

Usually it goes something like this...

Are you open to trades?

Sure, I’d be happy to trade for an early Lamborghini Countach or Ferrari unless it’s a Mondial.

Um, I was going to offer a 78 Dodge Monaco...

Yah, no, in that case I’d be happy to trade for cash.

Ok. Thanks.

I tried to sell a car through Craigslist. I clearly stated I was selling the car because I was moving cross-country and didn't want the hassle of shipping a car. I still got offers for trades.

^^^^^ Could be me selling. I listed some Corvette wheels on Craigs List for a very good price. Guy comes to look at them and offers a lowball price. I say no thanks. He tries again and I say no again and he leaves. Gets a block away and calls, saying he would take them at my price. I told him to bring an extra $50 if he wanted the wheels. He did not come back.
