Honolulu is having mass vax for those 75+ on the next two Mondays. They are taking appts, but I think I will wait and see how next Monday's mass vax goes before subjecting my mother to that.

On another island, there has been a brouhaha with visitors getting the vax. Apparently if you register with the CDC, you can get the vax anywhere you want to. At least we aren't wasting the vax.

I was just told that I can receive the vaccine because my wife works at the hospital. I have mixed feelings about this because it feels like I'm jumping the line. My parents haven't even received the vaccine yet. I told my wife I wouldn't feel right knowing there are high risk folks out there who really need the vaccine.

Getting mine on Sat 1/16, very excited. It was very easy to register and get an appointment in NYC

I understand. You are not jumping the line if you are included in a current group. That is up to you. Any additional shot in an arm is a shot in the right direction.

I know what you're saying. I'm gonna schedule but I have a REALLY hard time feeling right about this.

That is because you are a good peep. Think about others as much as you think about yourself.

I don't think at any point anybody is jumping any lines.
We need to get as much coverage as possible, and if you ask me the active/mobile population should be first because simply put, they are the engine of virus spread.

And of that active/mobile population anybody in any kind of care or linked to care should be vaccinated first.

Now that's your wife.. But let's say she's vaccinated.. that means she can't carry it.
But you still can.. There's probably a minor risk that you could end up infected and through some kind of second hand contact. anyway, debatable..
But if getting you vaccinated helps put that risk to bed, then no worries.. you are still active/mobile and part of the virus spread motor.. so your vaccination still helps.

every vaccinated person is one less connection through which it can spread.
And it spreading works exponentially as there are more connections.
So each connection take out, reduces to the reverse degree. till at some point it has nothing to jump to. and dies out.

After being told this morning about being able to get the vaccine, a lot of things went through my mind. First an uncomfortable feeling about getting the vaccine before others who really need it. Then the thought that back in March my wife was considered "non essential" but today she's so essential that even I should get the vaccine. That thought kind of made me a bit mad.

I get what you're saying about each vaccinated person being one less connection. But like I said, I'm pretty low risk for getting the virus because I work at home. I have very little contact with others and when I do have contact, I wear a mask and make sure to practice social distancing when I'm out. Am I perfect at it? Nope but still I'm pretty low risk. I think the vaccine I'm getting would be better served elsewhere... but I'm going to get it.

I'm scheduled for Monday and my second dose is already scheduled for February.

Don't worry about it, your one less vector for the virus to travel too.
and one less that can end up in the hospital with Covid.

it's a good thing either way

Even vaccinated people can carry the virus and get sick. Chances are low but not zero. Masks will still be required for many more months.

I do agree, if you can get the shot, get it. Overall, the more vaccines received, the better for the community, country and the world.

So... you show concern for the efficacy of the vaccine, yet no concern for the efficacy of masks - those leaky masks are magic, eh? ..but the vaccine is flawed?

BTW, do know that the vaccine has demonstrated efficacy against Covid.

Masks have ZERO demonstrated efficacy against Covid. In fact masks seem to give people a false sense of security, where they move less cautiously into Covid-potential situations.

Masks were never going to be the end game only a means to an end. Why is that difficult for anyone older than 10 to understand?

I'm not sure I agree with your original statement.

People who have the vaccine that are exposed to the virus do indeed take it up, and the antibodies will prevent the virus from developing. But that does not mean a person who cannot contract the virus will become a carrier. You are not creating more virus in your cells. We do not become "Typhoid Mary's".

If someone coughs in your face, and then you immediately cough on someone else, you MIGHT spread the virus. But most likely not. And anything in your system will be killed by the antibodies.

In the early days, it was thought the virus spread by touch. Then it was coughing. Those may work, but they are small vectors. The real vector is aerosolized particles caused from speaking or singing.

An immunized person (Natural or vaccine) is not going to transmit via aerosolized particles
