Craft ice?

My father and I built a lot of custom homes in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Malibu. We installed designer ice cube machines in some of them. They cost thousands of dollars. Amazing waste of money.

There are silicone trays for round ice balls. They are made of two halves that fit together, and you fill the sphere through a small hole in the top half.
They work OK, but are kind of a hassle, IMO. Here's one example.

Well - in my case, I was drinking scotch - so it cools it just bit as you sip - as well as adds a little water. With a regular cocktail that fills the glass - it would just serve as ice making it cold.

If they hand carved a shape out of a cube, sure that’s a craft. Freezing water in a shape isn’t much of a craft... baking your own loaf of bread doesn’t make it artisanal.

I think there was a place here in town that was using a jeweler's type wire saw to cut pieces of clear ice off of a large hunk. They made the big hunk over an 18-20 hour process, then cleaved off pieces as needed for drinks. Should you pay more for that pretty labor extensive process?


We just went to a local distillery after work, they had both crystal clear "ball ice" for low-ball glasses and "cylinder ice" for high-ball glasses, which is neat.


Neat. Also how I drank my Rye, because I have hair on my chest and don't need shiny ice balls for my booze.
