I think they have moved the stern about 100 yards from the edge of the canal but the bow is still stuck. They’re going to try and get the bow free later today. If that fails, they will be unloading some containers.

I'm sure all sorts of counter measures will be discussed to eliminate this from happening again, but beyond widening the channel, i'm not sure anything will be effective...Thoughts ?

They finally got it moving again a short while ago, here’s its current position: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1617031713.jpg |
I wish there were some Merchant Marine folks on here.
Let me geek out a little bit. During General Quarters (GQ) and what is know as a "Sea and Anchor Detail" an area known as "after steering" is manned. "After steering" is at the bottom of the ship aft. If power is lost or bridge control fails, the folks in after steering can manually operate the rudder of the ship. The Officer of the Deck can communicate via sound powered phones, etc. with the crew in AS. Manual control is slow but at least there is a chance of maintaining course. I do not know if commercial vessels do the same thing...my guess is that they do not. I had to stand an hour after steering watch as part of my qualification to become an Officer of the Deck underway. It was the longest, creepiest, hour of my life. |
Wild tinfoil possibility: The controls were hacked or it was done on purpose.

Wind and power loss should be enough to cause this issue.
|
If you read European news you will find that high winds caused the drifting of the ship into a shallow sand bar.

I had to do that. |

Apparently this ship captain wanted to be a dick to the world. He also drew a big butt while he was in there, waiting to enter the canal. And then he decided to bang the walls, which is how he got stuck. WTF??? He really screwed up, no pun intended. https://nypost.com/wp-content/upload...rip=all&w=2000 |

Had to actually steer from there more than once. At least on the bridge I had external visual references that helped during corrections. Trying to do the same over sound powered phone input sucked. But I always loved driving on the bridge. |
Might make it a little difficult to deploy the sixth fleet to the Indian Ocean and beyond if someone sank a couple container ships in the canal. The cape is a long way off.

Here's a good article.....
https://news.yahoo.com/probe-underway-day-cargo-ship-060141759.html 2 questions: What went wrong? and Who's going to pay? "When blame gets assigned, it will likely lead to years of litigation to recoup the costs of repairing the ship, fixing the canal and reimbursing those who saw their cargo shipments disrupted. Since the vessel is owned by a Japanese firm, operated by a Taiwanese shipper, flagged in Panama and now stuck in Egypt, matters quickly become an international morass." I hope the companies that helped with getting it unstuck have enough capital to wait for years to be paid for their efforts. |
