Just.trash.shiny

Have we discussed this app here before? Brits with too much time on their hands have developed a three word generator to define all three meter square plots on the planet:

https://what3words.com/just.trash.shiny

Pretty cool.

That's kind of cool. You could tell your lyft driver to take you to "fallen.trace.chest" and he'd know exactly where you wanted to be.

Or search and rescue on a mountaintop. Or finding friends at a concert (if they ever have those again). Of course, you'd have to agree beforehand to use the app. I've already encountered resistance at home - I have Google Maps, why do I need this?

I have it for when I am biking the trails. Apparently our local paramedics all have it. Thankfully I haven't had to use it.

OK, but why?

All smartphones have a GPS, and the coordinates of X, Y & X will bring you to within inches of that spot. Those coordinates have been established for many years, as in a century or more, and it even has the elevation included.

chopsticks.bathing.advances may be Readbeard's pool area, but no human will guess that without the app. Why not stick with what has worked for many years and can be sub millimeter accurate?

Seems like a solution looking for a problem? I can see minor benefit in that it’s easier to remember than a strong of gps coordinates... ...but is that needed?

If you already need a smart phone for it, then why not just cast the gps location to the other device?

It might be a great way to make up new passwords. chopsticks.bathing.advances is not something one would guess as a password. Just add in for symbols in place of the periods.

chopsticks&bathing#advances!2021 would be a good password.

Absolutely. Three long random words stuck together is a decent password, at least, until/if the list of every location on the planet from the app is added to a dictionary attack.

On the off chance that you're about to run out of batteries and could only call grandma who couldn't be bothered to write down GPS coordinates... richest.enthusiastic.upholding ... but of course there's no cell service there so, you'd be dead by the time they find you.
