When you start using the phrase "back in the day when..."

You hear yourself using expressions that your dad used.

You get up in the morning and look in the mirror and see your father's face staring back at you.

It will be ten years ago in December when my widowed mother passed. Her brother and I spoke quietly at her service in one of those perfect moments in family life that renew familial love.

It was then that he became the first (and only) person to ever tell me I looked exactly like my father.

10 years later, I'm beginning to believe him.

You use two spaces after a period.

Salmon sashimi and chicken congee.

You nervously meet your date's parents, and you're older than they are.

You get the waking farts when don't expect in the most public places, and you really don't care.

My 92 year old former boss would do that. It was astonishing to hear him walk across the building and with every step was a fart, and then him saying whoops, on one step, and excuse me on the next step. For 50 feet or more! We all just giggled quietly. In his words he took "early retirement" at age 92. On his 92nd birthday he took his final flight as a pilot in command. He was driving a car until his death at age 99. He kissed his wife goodnight and walked upstairs with no help, and she found him a few hours later when she went to bed. No hospital stay, no nursing home, and smart as a whip until the end.

I just came to this realization a few weeks ago!

And realize he was only 5 years older than you are now when he passed.
