Anyone have a V8 944 ?
Not sure why but I am intrigued by 944's with V8 conversions . The little bit of research I have done says the V8 is the same weight or even lighter than the original four cylinder . If that's accurate then handling should still be great . Obviously a big increase in performance . So any of you own one ? Or have in the past ? I know it is a red headed step child to the Porsche community but I am a regular dude that doesn't hang out with the wine and cheese folks .

The little bit of online research there seems to be a lot of negative feedback on Renegade . Much more positive reviews about a company in Texas . I am hoping to find one that is done or mostly done ......... If I even consider it.

He's been around for many years. He pissed me off 30 years ago while splitting lanes on my 914/6.
I believe his penis has been shortened over the the years. kinda of like Jake irked some people.... BTW, izzn't Jake worth a Bazinga dollars by now?

I’ve been intrigued by those, too.
With a modern V8 and modern injection system, I think you can use some kind of GM 6 speed, modern ice cold AC, quiet exhaust and comfortable street suspension. Would make a nice daily driver that could probably get 20/25 mpg. I thought the same thing about a 914 V8, though. Which I eventually had. It was a very nice one, factory steel GT flares, 930 transmission (expensive but worth it), Carrera front suspension, Scheel sports seats, etc. 2400 lbs and 300+ hp. It was a lot of fun, and was a totally badass car and I liked it, but . . . ultimately it never felt quite “right” to me. That being said, of all the many many cars I’ve owned and sold, if I could have one back to drive for a few weeks, it would probably be that car. |

Check out the 07K swap 944s. As much power as the LS in a much smaller package.

I put a 6.2 LS into a 89 951 made a great car. The brake master was a challenge as were the cv joints but a cool project
I took it to a dyno along with a hot rod 911SC The 6.2 951 made more power at idle than the SC made TOTAL. Goofy

I think they're awesome too. However, a 88 or 89 951 (body reinforcements, better t-ax and brakes...) or 968 are the best bets and both are getting pretty expensive. Not confident the 951 T-ax can handle everything an LS can be made to dish-out over the long haul. Maybe the 968 box is better.
In the end, those concerns broke the deal for me and I bought a Lingenfelter'd Z06. It isn't as "cool" or sleepy but also isn't a problem child, has a Tremec box and 4-wheel double wishbones, has no issues with factory or go-faster parts availability and totally howls when spurred.

We serviced a LS3 Renegade car for a while before it was sold out of province. It needed plenty of tweaking to be "OK" Throttle cable, steering shaft, power brake booster (lack of) etc....
Much like the LS7 Boxster we helped sort out from them.... Shifter Cables, wheel bearings, CV joints, cabin heat issues..... The kits are are 60-70% solution... you need to get on board with being part of the R&D team....

It is probably much easier and cheaper to build a new kit car with a V8 motor. That's what I did in 1998, with a brand new crate motor that I then tuned . The car lacks home comforts such as AC, heater, doors, windscreen, roof, radio, but it does have a good sized trunk, and weighs 700 kg.( 1540 pounds).

Hey Paul hope all is well with you and family . Did not realize TC had one of these. I see his is a S2 chassis per the rear badge . Did he build it or buy it already converted ?

I've heard the V8 track cars break frequently. I am not sure how true this is for a DD.

If I move forward with this the intent would be 300-350 drive ability horsepower . Basically a German hot rod . At those numbers and some common sense between the ears the chassis/transaxle/CV axles should live in harmony . I have a lead on a fairly clean running 1986 944 for 4K . Starting with a car that runs/drives is much better in my opinion . The engine can be sold to help defray some cost. Just thinking out loud at the moment .
I had a 1987 944S that I really liked , it was well balanced and loved the rear hatch storage space . I didn't love the snapped timing belt 😩 1000 miles after a pro installed it and retensioned it . The simplicity/power/sound/reliability of a GM V8 is alluring 😁
