i went Prius shopping yesterday.

all they had was two screaming hot nail polish red ones. no thanks.

what did surprise me was the Corolla Hybrid. 52 mpg, and sticker price was less than $24k. i sat inside and the interior is spacious. very boring. like wonder bread sliced bread. boring. very reminiscent of the first generation Prius.

i went home to check on any roof rack options, and both Corollas sold in about 1 hour. not sure the roof rack will work. bar spacing is max at 25 inch.

but either car would be a great appliance daily driver. it is amazing howdiminished new car inventory is. I'm not worried, i found another larger dealership with more appliances in stock.

i imagine haggling a better price is a pipe-dream in today's new car climate?

Or, you could pay just as much for a used one.

By a back up catalytic converter, or appropriate insurance coverage if you decide to buy either. You are going to need it. It will be sawed off real quick.

You might also consider a Lexus UX250h which is a hybrid which gets 60 mpg to an Imperial gallon or about 48 mpg to a US gallon. I liked the way it drives. It has a head up display. I like Toyota/Lexus reliability. Not sure if you get this model in the US.
I googled it and you can get it in the US

Check out the Camry Hybrid, costs a little more but gas mileage similar, lot more room, nicer generally.

You know, my WRX gets crazy great fuel economy below 75 MPH (6.3 L/100 kms or 37MPG). And still pretty good at over 80 MPH (7.2 L/100 or 32 MPG). Subaru has all sorts of roof rack options and this car is cost competitive with that Corolla… it does need premium fuel however.

It is fun to drive at ~258 HP and 250 ft-lb in a small but roomy 4 door sedan… just a thought.

The handling is amazing on these cars. You need to spend a pile on an air cooled 911 to make it handle as well (ask me how I know).

Go electric or go ICE.

I wouldn't expect a few more mpg to be a primary consideration around this neck of the woods.

I am with the ICE or EV but not a hybrid crowd. Are you sitting in stop and go a lot? Otherwise look at regular compact cars, their gas mileage has gotten really good as well, but you do have to keep moving in them. If you do stop and go a lot and it is a commuter to work only, go EV. So much easier and cheaper to maintain and with gas prices at almost $5 it must be cheaper to charge overnight, even if you don't have a solar system.

i do all sorts of driving.

stop go. go..go slow, go fast. my tacoma is awful with the fuel. 18 average.

i think a tiny appliance would fit the bill. i can fold the seat down to fit rifles and fishing rods. i pulled a tape measure. i bet i could sleep in the back of a prius. bringing in ammo from Nevada would be easier, expeically if i get a "save the whales" bumper sticker

roof rack and i can even do some kayak fishing trips. i'm not ready to go EV, since i dont want to dick with my home electrical. plus this time around, my wife gets the garage - no questions asked. it is her turn. i can fit two cars, except my motorcycle and kayak takes up space. i'll fix my garage when my wife gets her Tesla.

i understand that.

but that's what awesome about life. we all get to choose our priorities. i'm keeping my truck for the fun stuff. it's just something i want to do, for myself. i dont enjoy, or want to spend lots of gas just driving to random places. not if i dont have to.

i just heard an awesome Ricky Gervais skit. AWESOME. it applies here. he was talking about people getting offended by twitter post. he says he just puts them out there. he has millions of followers. some people dont see it the same as him and complain.

he says that's like going into a town square and looking at the cork board and seeing an advertisement for guitar lessons and saying, "but i dont want Guitar lessons!" and then calling the number, and telling the guitar teacher, "but i dont want guitar lessons!"

"just walk away"

hahahha..

Nice thinking outside the boring box. I just can't do boring.

Interesting, why is that?

To me, hybrid has always seemed like a better way to go, but then I haven't really looked into hybrid or electric so that's just a gut feeling more than anything else.

I was impressed when I was in NY several years ago, and the taxis were mostly either Priuses or some little electric van. My thought was that if they made it as taxis, that, at least in the right environment, they must be pretty good cars.

Premium gas -> $$$. We say mpg but what we really care about is mp$ and premium is more $.

I like hybrids. You get substantially better mpg/$ with no tradeoffs, understanding we’re talking about appliance cars.
