Armenian Cucumber, WTF?

I transplanted a mandarin orange tree from a container into the ground, and noticed some plants coming up near the tree. I presumed this was butternut squash, because they were popping up in a few places as volunteers this year. A few of the squash are already big as my head.

Turns out I have about 100 square feet of Armenian Cucumbers, taking over that part of the yard like the GD Borg from Star Trek.

No idea how these plants got started. Neither the wife or I care for cucumber, which these things resemble, and taste like, but they are some sort of muskmelon. I guess I will keep watering them, the daughter likes them anyway.

Could be worse. At least it's not poison ivy.

And you have at least one person that likes them.

I've had surprises pop up in my garden that I've attributed to bird poo.

Yep. If it's on a fence line or under something that could be a perch, then I assume a bird donated.

Armenian Cucumbers are great and can be served like you would have a veggie tray (i.e., celery, carrots, etc... and a dip). However, they do not store long and when put in the fridge they only last a couple of days and then go mushy. I get them at costco all the time.

I think those are the ones my mother likes. She has digestions issues with regular ones.

I would like to see that as the 'challenge ingredient' on "Beat Bobby Flay"!

I used to date a half Persian girl. Her dad would make a sort of Turkish salad for us all the time. He was from Rasht. He used them in his salad.

I could send you some bamboo. Then you could have bamboo shoots (invasive and edible!).
