Can you imagine the nightmare of someone stealing your entire house?

The good news is that it sounds like both victims are usually made right as far as the house goes. AKA, both parties usually get most of their money back if there's title insurance (and presumably the original owners keep their home). The horrible news, I suspect is that all of the original owners stuff that was in the house is probably gone forever. I assume the fraudsters may use some furniture to stage, but then once the house is sold, I assume they clear everything out including sentimental items, and that stuff probably goes to a landfill somewhere. Furniture is largely replaceable. Sentimental stuff is generally not.

how is that even possible??? how can anybody transfer the title of the house
based on fake ID's??

Are canadian ID's so easy to fake?? are they made out of cardboard with no tampering protection????
Do notaries simply not check for valid official ID's?

Titles are transferred by lawyers who probably just check a driver's license for the seller and the buyer. I imagine a passport or something more difficult to duplicate will be required soon.

Houses with no mortgage are apparently easier to sell fraudulently, because there's no bank interaction required.

And I think most mortgages include 'title insurance' which protect you from the fraudulent sale of your home. Not sure how the buyer is protected. Buyers never meet the seller here, so you're probably relying on your lawyer's insurance.

An interesting interaction with State LEO

First of all he was absolutely professional, courteous and justified in pulling me over.

Here's what happened. I was traveling down a dark two lane last night when up ahead I could see a patrol car with it's lights on pulled over coming the other way. As I got closer the bright lights made it hard for me to see anything other than the lights. I slowed and moved to the right onto the hard shoulder in order to ensure that I wasn't crowding anyone. I got by and resumed my drive. Less than a mile on I see the Trooper light up the guy behind me and come around. I figured he was answering a call, so I moved over as well. No, he was after me.

He asked why I wasn't maintaining my position in the lane and I explained why. He said OK but I'm going to check your docs. "Do you have any points on your license?". "No sir I don't" He came back "OK sir you're good to go".

So. I've been told that if you're not being reckless or careless AND you've no points against you a LEO doesn't really want to be the one to put points on your license. Anecdotal example of this being true or maybe he just wanted to make suree I wasn't drunk.

As I said he was polite and professional.

In two different occasions, the last couple years of being pulled over, I've had the same question asked.
Also, both times another question..."Do you own this car?"

Both times..."watch your speed..you're good to go"

A930Rocket 02-21-2023 06:21 PM

As I was driving down the road one time, I saw a cop had a car pulled over. I could not move over because of a car next to me, but I slowed down.

Next thing I know, he’s pulling me over for not moving over for him. Never mind the car blocking me.🙄

I got a warning.

flatbutt 02-21-2023 07:09 PM

I wish they'd realize how blinding the emergency lights are for oncoming traffic. If anyone had been in the roadway I wouldn't have seen them until I was on top of them.

I've been pulled over plenty over the years. I've never had any experience other than professional and courteous.

Most folks these days don't care or do anything differently when they see lights flashing. The fact that you reacted made you stand out. I'm betting they thought you were drunk or under the influence of something.
Seems like a good time to do some cleaning.

Paul's thread about the Reina del Cid Death Cap song lead me to this song. I'm not big into country, but this isn't bad, and man is she cute!

Fools And Bairns

Since I 'm too young to be a baby, I know what that makes me.
Sunday AM, in the barn changing water buckets when I walked behind the old gelding just as he was shaking a cramp out of a back foot. I caught it just below my left knee ( again). It was a few seconds before I was sure nothing was broken. Lots of ice, rest and motrin. No long time effects.
Thank goodness the wife is through her bout of sciatica.

Ow! Watch it fella.

flatbutt 03-21-2023 12:20 PM

That will leave a mark! Well at least there is still hockey to watch. :D

oldE 03-21-2023 01:04 PM

I haven't watched hockey since the days of the 6 team league.
While I was lying back with the leg up and either ice or heat on it, I got well into a novel set in France in the '40s "The Book Of Lost Names "
The horse is now on meds to relieve the discomfort in his back legs.
I got off lucky, again.

If we set aside a gas leak I'd bet on a dust explosion. When I was working for Warner Lambert one of our factories exploded due to dust accumulation in the air ducts.

Wow! I understand that dust under the wrong circumstances can be dangerous causing explosions due to the fast burning. I have to assume that requires the right kind of dust. I'm not sure if cocao powder would do that or not, but then I guess a 70 year old building could have a lot of regular old dust.

The factory explosion I mentioned was in a chicle (chewing gum) factory. They used magnesium stearate to prevent the chicle from sticking and that was the dust that exploded. Cocoa has a lot of carbon in it so I'd expect it to burn rather easily in dust form.

Interesting, thanks for the additional detail. I wonder how the magnesium stearate compares to magnesium filings.

True bird seed story -

In the 1980's a friend of mine had a Blue Cheek Parrot that was something like 30 years old. It was given to him when the owner was getting on with age. He was instructed to feed it a particular type and brand of food and never to deviate from it. Joe the Parrot was a great bird. Friendly, affectionate and generally good personality for a bird that could tear your fingers off -literally.

That certain type of bird feed went on back order. (actually tons and tons were held at customs) so friend gets another brand for about 2-3 months . Joe the Parrot went full nuts. I got bit and had a nice chunk of knuckle torn off. Then Joe bit my friend pretty good. This bird was not a biter in the past.

My friend was ready to let him go free and at the time would probably done well with the old Busch Gardens flock that was running wild and amok around the San Fernando Valley.

My friend takes Joe to a vet thinking he has some kind of bird illness. The vet asks what he feeds Joe? Vet smirks and tells my friend Joe is a junky. Yes a big time junky due to his age, how long he has been on this diet of seed mix and going through withdrawal. All Joe's life he had been fed a steady diet of bird heroin. A feed mix that has a high poppy seed ratio. Joe was an addict. All the bird Vets knew about this seed mix.

"Your bird is so calm and well behaved" is not from training or good behavior. They are comfortably numb.

The Vet had a line on a similar brand and type of bird seed mix that got Joe back on his fix. The original brand of seed mix finally came back on the market. Joe lived another 12 years as a very cool bird and back to his usual self again.

Funny you mention Busch Gardens. We lived in Van Nuys and went to Busch Gardens a number of times.

We has a bush in the front yard that had little red berries, that it turns out Toucans liked. I only know this because we had a Toucan visit our house to eat those berries. Busch Gardens ended up coming by to pick up their bird.

My wife has a Kitchenaid mixer with the PTO on the front.
Years ago, she begged, pleaded and demanded the slicer grater attachment for it.
Subsequently, it has sat unused, in the box.

Last night she prepared cucumber sandwiches for her co-workers.
Using a brand new mandolin slicer, she cut up a cucumber. Never mind we already have a mandolin slicer, plenty of knives, and the aforementioned mixer attachment.

She managed to slice the tip off her thumb.

I helped her bandage up the thumb. I'm amazed she passed nursing school.
She found the piece of thumb. It will not end up in one of the sandwiches.

flatbutt 04-11-2023 02:00 PM

Yeah man those mandolin slicers have no conscience at all!

Evans, Marv 04-11-2023 03:04 PM

Did that sort of thing twice. Fist time I sliced off the end of a finger. I retrieved it from under the mandolin. It grew back, & now I can't even tell which one if was. Second time my wife wanted me to slice a stick of peperoni. Don't try slicing something like that. It flexed & I took off the outside part of my right thumb nuckle. I can still see where that happened.

flatbutt 04-13-2023 04:36 AM

This one is too close for comfort. The chances of it jumping across a 4 lane highway may not be too high but the wind has been very strong the last few days. We're not accustomed to stuff like this.

Forest fire scares me. Maybe time to put together a bugout kit.

Not much chance that a fire would spare my neighborhood.

I put a starter and a battery in a 2007 Mistu Eclipse coupe this morning.

Owner texts me and says the trunk lid (hatch) stays up now, it must be the new battery.

I said the gas inside the trunk lid shocks get warm on a hot day and they work better than in the winter.

She says, "Oh, the fumes?"

It never landed with her.

I don't charge enough.

I wonder how much its going to cost to clean all of the mess up?
