hahaha. That's hilarious.
I road bikes, pretty much constantly from the time I was 7 or 8 until I turned 16. I climbed trees a lot of that time too. I never wore a helmet, and I never had a major head issue/injury, and I never knew anyone that did, but I'm sure it happened. I did a lot of stuff, but I also had a pretty strong sense of self preservation. I probably would NOT have ended up on youtube, had there been the option back then.

Ha, excellent!
BTW and I don't mean to be a downer but Indian Larry died because he had an accident performing a stunt in a car park. He wasn't wearing a helmet... RIP.

I have since thrown them away, but I used to keep two helmets on my "riding gear" shelf. One was an old Bell Star II, the other a newer Arai. Both full faced. Both missing a good chunk of the forehead and the chin.
The Bell earned its stripes on the way to work one morning way back in 1980. A Toyota pickup merged into me on the freeway and knocked the front wheel on my Sportster (the one I still have) out from under me with its rear step bumper. The Arai earned its in 2013 when my wife and I were knocked from our Road King in a head-on with an F250. I used to show them to some of my Harley riding friends. I've since given up. ATGATT... has save me twice, my wife once. I wish people would listen...

I spent decades riding and racing bicycles both on the road and velodrome, I don’t care what you think your self preservation abilities or instincts are at any speed fast enough where a helmet is going to save you, you are not fast enough/good enough/skilled enough to keep from landing on your head if that is the direction you are going. I am 100% convinced had I not had one on at a race I would be a goner or a veggie - going about 35mph the already narrow European road got abruptly smaller with a tall curb to a sidewalk. I went down hard and head first, helmet as designed split into multiple segments. - Wear a helmet!

Back in the early '70's I was following a friend in a clot of cars going around T-9 at Riverside on about the second lap of a Formula Ford race. At about 135 mph his car squirted up 15 feet in the air and came down up-side-down, skidded a ways on the roll hoop...until it collapsed.... and continued to slide on the engine valve cover and his helmet. I figured he was pretty dead as the car was laying flat and his arm was sticking out from under the mess as I went by. Fortunately he did survive to race again after skin grafts and months of recovery. A group of us examined his new Bell Star full face helmet in the impound area. That sucker saved his life as it was ground down flat on one side to the point of almost going thru to his face.
You don't really need a helmet...until you really need it. |

Confession time. I was on the honda and saw there were no mountain bikers riding around a suburban mountain biking track so I cut lose on the XR400. Something went wrong and I went sailing through the air head first but back to the ground and hit a big rock with my head. It was the only rock for 25 meters all around. I was thinking do not black out, but wow was I hurt. I got the hell out of there before anyone turned up. And bought a new helmet the next day. It saved me.

Even with a cage, I wear a helmet. End over End tumbles make you appreciate 6 point harnesses too.

I guess if I were riding in 2021 I would indeed wear a helmet. I just prefer a climate controlled dry car interior over anything with two wheels and me in the open. Just my preference.

I wore helmets then, even though 99.9% of my riding was on purpose built areas for cyclists, walkers, etc.... A road bike it different from a 20" bike of the sort that I rode when I was a kid, especially with your feet attached to the pedals, the position that you're in, and the speeds that you see.

Great ad!
I don't understand why the Jeep / Rock crawler crowd say they don't go fast enough to wear a helmet. Their cars can still topple over, and last I checked, when things go south, boulders and other stuff can easily occupy the same space that the head and body normally occupies. SMH.

Helmets are fine with me. I ride a lot and a helmet is a must. What amazes me are all the bikers (I'm talking motor bikers), that ride in shorts and tee shirts. Every time I read about a serious motorcycle accident, I always notice the dead guy was not wearing any gear.
For me, it's so common that I don't feel comfortable with out my bike gear on. |

I've heard stories of guys with body parts that looked like hamburger meat mixed with gravel and crap from the road. I was told that they take a fairly stiff brush to scrub the gravel and road crap out of the meat. That doesn't sound like much fun. I don't entirely trust myself to not do something foolish, but on top of that, the drivers in Houston are some of the worst that I've ever run across in the US. No way in hell I'd ride a motorcycle around here. If I did ever ride a motorcycle, I'd be fully kitted up which sounds freakin HOT in our weather.
