Space X launch in about 5 minutes

Anybody watching? I get a bit nervous when I think about the physics involved.

They look like their wearing motorcycle suits. A bit non-chalant in how they do things. Very different from NASA, and who are these people?

And it's going to bite them in the a** at some point.

edit- they've obviously watched the "wear your helmet" video!

Spent the whole live sequence waiting for the morton thiokol leaks.

When there are people sitting on top of all that fuel, and I don't care who they are, I'm on the edge of my seat hoping for the best.

Amazing stuff none nevertheless....

Watched the launch, agreed there is not nearly enough concern for the risks involved. Those suits offer nothing in the way of survival in the event of a leak or anything.

Good to see it happen but the casual environment/attitude will quickly change when something goes wrong and I’m sure civilian space travel will be quickly shut down.

*since* they are okay.
I'm in the wrong profession. I need to go back in time and write SNL skits.

In it, the snl characters would be reporting from space, live from space-x, taking hits from the space-x pony keg like it was a frat party. Will Ferrell would be peeing over in the corner of the capsule. The cheerleeder girl, after getting sick, asked if she was suffering from space sickness, would laughingly pull out a bottle of Beluga vodka, yell "hell no" and chug more a they float about in pure weighlessness- except in the video we could see the wires supporting them.

Nonchalant stuff like that.

My point and shoot isn't that great - especially for night photos.

But at least I was got to see it in person. While standing in the ocean....

The effects of the 1st stage emitting gasses before descending was surreal!

I watched it. Still amazing after so many years of launches. Quite a different attitude compared to NASA.

Obviously I know nothing about those suits but those boots don't "look" pressure secure. I would think they must be.

One must admit that the space program sure has made a serious evolution from the NASA days to where it is now.

They are flight suits, just next generation compared to the old shuttle flight “orange” suit.

They are anything but motorcycle jackets.

LOL- the second video is funny. The NASA suits weren't "fancy" enough so they hired a Hollywood costume designer.

Maybe!

Would I go if asked, hell yea. From what I have heard even NASAs highly trained fighter pilots - astronauts usually get "space sick" and start puking. Look at some of the longer video tours of the space station and the interviews with real astronauts.

Three days of horrendous motion sickness may not be much fun.

Then they are in a small capsule. They will be eating and in need of the restroom facilities. How good it the smell filters in the air supply. A fart is bad enough in an elevator, now imagine upset stomachs and bowels added in.

I would put up with it for the chance at space flight. I just don't have any mega billionaire friends, dang it.

I'd go in a minute. However, no more than three days. Maybe we could start a GoFundMe page?

Exactly. Having been personally involved in about 40 Shuttle launches, I understand why NASA was so anal about everything. It was because almost every aspect of a launch had the potential to end badly and kill you. Were they perfect? No, but there was method to the madness.

I applaud the commercial ventures and wish them success.

One major difference, NASA did it and invented the safety equipment at the same time while using slide rules and drafting boards. The Russians went to space and took a LOT more risk with the life's of the cosmonauts. They did everything in total secrecy and only talked about the successes.

NASA did in in full public view.

It is really cool that we are at a point that total civilians can go into orbit and beat anything the original Mercury missions ever did. It was not until Gemini that we got to long orbits.

I think it would be great if private enterprise was able to match or outpace efforts of governments. Could be Musk might have a chance to equal the U.S. & China in their Mars programs.

I don't like it at all. People will die someday on a SpaceX craft. It's just the odds. I'd rather they were conservative.
