Nice exchange, but I have to say in ALL, but one (Utah Highway Patrol), it has been similar; even when I was cited. I think the driver and passenger's attitude really contributed to a professional and friendly exchange as much as the Officer. Respect goes a long way, even if he would have cited them, it still was a good exchange.

Over the years ... prolly written up 1/4 of the times I've been "lit up"... and I've had a few really cool encounters too. Once got complimented on how good my 911 sounded... as he handed me a speeding ticket

I remember one time. Coming down Angeles Crest Hwy in my lowered 56 VW.......I just put it in neutral and coasted. Evidently I exceeded the speed limit. Got yanked over by the CHP....

Do you know how fast you were going? Nope.....was just coasting with my radio on 11. Saved a couple bucks on fuel.....I'm sober and you can search my car....just stinking ski schizzle wear and some polaroid's of my GF....

He handed back my docs got back in his ride and that was it. Sat there for a minute, looked in my mirror and he was gone.

That reminds me of the stop I encountered when the BMW R1100S was still new to me. I was riding on a two lane near the upstate NY border with Massachusetts. Just riding along minding my own business grinning like a dog chewing on a T bone when all of a sudden I get lit up.

I pull over immediately, doff the helmet so the officer can see that I'm an old man and wait. The usual occurs "sir you were going way too fast, may I see your documents please?" "Sure OK if I dismount?".

While I'm fishing out my papers the officer does a kind of double take, steps back and says" Hey is this the new beemer?" "Why yes" says I, "do you ride?" "Yes" says he. "We were just talking about this bike at the barn, is it fun?"

I seize the moment and say"Well yes, yes it is" " Throw a leg over, give it a try".

The guy actually thought about it for a moment then politely declined. He said "look I'm giving you a warning and calling ahead for my guys to watch out for you. Slow down."

Off I go. Whew.

He still gave me the ticket though.
