List your favorite stand up comedians?

I have been watching a lot of stand up for the last year or so. I wonder why?
There are really great ones out there but I know I've missed some.

Here is a partial list. In no particular order.

George Carlin
Rodney
Ricky Gervais
Steven Wright
Bill Burr
Jimmy Carr
Eddie Murphy
Chris Rock
Robin Williams
Bob Newhart
Redd Foxx
Lewis Black
Don Rickles

I'll stop there.
Who did I miss?
Please let me know, I'm always looking for a laugh.

aschen 10-07-2021 08:26 AM

Chappelle, Ralphie Bay, Burr, Nicki Glasser

MikeSid 10-07-2021 08:50 AM

Richard Pryor
Jim Gaffigan

Don't overlook the women. Some of the comedy is tailored to women, (Iliza Shlesinger - "Pinterest is porn for white women"), but I think Sarah Colonna is really funny all around.

RANDY P 10-07-2021 08:51 AM

But not for the reasons you think.

Good ones listed so far. Here are a few more Lenny Bruce, Bill Cosby, Steve Martin, Sam Kinison, Garry Shandling, Bill Hicks, Mitch Hedberg, Brian Regan, George Wallace, Norm MacDonald, Dana Gould, Kevin Hart.

masraum 10-07-2021 09:10 AM

Lots of great names here.

I saw Pauly Shore do standup on HBO or MTV or something years ago, and he was hilarious.

Hmm, trying to think of my all time favs, probably #1 is Robin Williams. Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor are way up at the top of the list with Sam Kinison too.

IROC 10-07-2021 09:20 AM

Some great ones already mentioned, but to add two more:

Richard Jeni
Ron White

Edit: and a hearty +1 for Elisa Schlesinger. She's good.

I'm not familiar with Richard, but +1 on Ron and Iliza Shlesinger (funny and really cute!)

I saw some Trevor Noah standup that was great, then he seemed to get super political, and was still funny, but I'm so tired of the political BS, that I stopped watching him.

Richard Jeni was a hilarious guy back in the 80s and 90s (?) who, tragically, befell the same fate as many comedians - suicide. Check out some of his videos on youtube. His delivery was awesome.

I will add Jeff Foxworthy to the list also. He could tell stories like Jerry Clower. His old stuff was brilliant.

Gallagher!

stevej37 10-07-2021 10:44 AM

Lots of great ones...but my fav of all would have to be Rodney Dangerfield.

Also..nobody mentioned Groucho.

JavaBrewer 10-07-2021 10:50 AM

Ron White
Bill Burr
JP Sears (awakenwithjp)

We saw Ron White in his early days at a local comedy club. He had us laughing so hard I was hoping he would tell a few duds so I could catch my breath. My sides were truly in pain and the next day honestly I felt like I had been gut punched from sore muscles, and my jaw was sore from laughing so much.

And I love most of the comedians listed above.

One more I have not seen on the list, Jay Leno.

He still tours and does stand up. That is how he pays for all of his cars. He said he gave all his Tonight Show money to his wife to invest. He has been married to the same woman for 41 years. One wife, lots of cars is the right formula.

scotricker 10-07-2021 12:20 PM

Tim Tool Time Allen

1990C4S 10-07-2021 12:20 PM

Jimmy Carr, Sara Millican...some good UK stuff there.

matthewb0051 10-07-2021 12:54 PM

Saw this on HBO or something a million years ago. Absolute classic Robin Williams

Por_sha911 10-07-2021 07:11 PM

Cosby
Bob Newhart
Steve Hughes
The politicians who claim spending trillions on their pet agendas won't increase our debt.

Bill Douglas 10-07-2021 07:19 PM

I'm not joking about this, but I really like the absolute beginners, first timers, that you see at a stand up comedians night at the pub.

MMiller 10-07-2021 08:04 PM

Patrice O'Neil.. No longer with us but was a very funny man.

70SATMan 10-07-2021 08:39 PM

Tater Salad!

Snow Cone!

Cat Juggling!

All of my favs have been listed already. Saw Dice early and loved him but he was like a one trick pony.

Got to see Steve Martin live (probably my high point). Saw John Oliver live in Chicago pre Covid and loved him.

Anthony Jeselnik.

Most people probably write off Steve Martin, but he was brilliant. He was part of that era, though, where jokes took time to evolve - they weren't just one-liners. He was (is) a genuinely funny guy. I have his album (vinyl, of course) "Let's Get Small" from 1977. I still quote and laugh about things on that album. "Always...no wait, it was...never keep a litter bag in your car...".

Hilarious.

Good list would add

Mel, Norm, Rodney, Chappelle, Richard Pryor

I remember seeing Steven Wright when nobody ever heard of him, hilarious. Sam Kinison was disappointing. Late, too drunk and high to do his thing. Died not too long after that, sad.

I would have a harder time parng the list than adding too it. Steve Martin impresses me with the musical talent and genius comedian

As a guy who grew up in the South, I always found Larry the Cable Guy to either be trying too hard or just plain fake. It's like he's from New York trying to be from the South. Just my opinion.

No doubt! I have both of those early albums... His SNL work during that era was epic as well.

I gave my cat a bath the other day,,,,,,:D

Totally agree, Steve Martin is brilliant. I still love The Jerk, such a great movie.
Completely different direction comedy wise, but Bert Kreisler is funny as h*ll...
