you think you could give up anything TV and just stick with books?

there is one thing common among my smarter friends. they all read.

they speak well, put together good sentences, they know things. they are always reading something.

what do you think? no movies, no TV, etc.

just read for entertainment.

i'm out. i dont think i could do it.

I read a lot. I also watch tv more than I should.
The books stick with me much more than tv does.

The view from my desk.

But I have no intention of throwing away my tv. I am very selective about what I watch. There’s plenty of movies and even shows that don’t make you stupid.

I even find time for crap. I love mystery science theatre.

I used to read a lot. As a senior in high school I read over 100 books on my own, not counting the stuff we had to read for class. Now I have astigmatism. If I read for long the world is fuzzy when I look up from the book.

My wife reads a lot of books on her iPad from the local metro library. It is free to tax payers, and she reads a couple of books per month.

Didn't have a TV for many years as a child. It helped my vocabulary immensely.

When I moved to Oklahoma in 1978 I did not have a TV. I did not get one until the mid 1980s. I was tired of missing events like the Space Shuttle launchs. I had just the three basic OTA channels only.

I think this is an easier notion since you can no longer plop a tv in the corner and get reception with a pair of bunny ears. With the extra modules, and smart tv that stream.

I don't own a TV, but could see myself getting a non smart tv for just watching movies.....

^^^ A smart tv will give you the ability to watch movies.
A non-smart...you will have to add on.

We have a smart TV, it is not connected to the internet.

We watch Triple D sometimes during supper and at night I will watch a show like Great Planes or Secrets of the Universe with the sleep timer on. If it is silent I will not fall asleep for hours.

I like to read and I play games with the kids. Unless the youngest is flying a Corsair C. You can't get close to him with those cannons.

On TV I only watch the news, Bondi Rescue (very good) and an Australian series called Gold Diggers or something like that about searching for gold. Also good.

Other than that I wouldn't miss the TV. Not one bit.

Umm, I only read stuff that you guys write LOL

I love books and I love Movies/TV.

The problem that I have with books is that if I get a good one, I can't put it down.

I can watch a movie or TV show and turn it off when it's over or sometimes when it's not if it's late and time to go to bed.

If I'm reading a really good book, I can have a hard time putting that book down and consequently, stay up far too late.

Whenever I see or hear about a very accomplished person, I say, "He/she doesn't watch much TV."

Interesting topic. I watch tv and read books. I have lots of books and am surprised how little value my books from the 1950's and 1960's are. Books are a good activity to fall asleep by. Going through my books it is hard to give them away as I am so attached to them.

I pretty much stopped watching TV a couple years ago. Finally talked Ms Rocket into disconnecting cable, so we have Internet only.

I used to read books every week, but several years ago my reading turned to online.

Can I still listen to music?

Last movie I saw in a theater was Toy Story 3. I don't care for television much anyway, so it would not be a hardship at all

We disconnected the TV 20 years ago.
Our bookshelves are a mess of military history, historical fiction, fantasy, sci_fi, mysteries and biography.
We sold and gave away a bunch a few years back because the big bookcase was double stacked.
It's a sickness. The library folks have stopped asking me if I want to replace my old card.

Best

Funny in 1982 I had an English teacher Mrs. Bassett, she had hairy arm pits was married with a dughter my age so 17 at the time. They did not have a TV in their house. I just couldn't fathom they didn't have a TV and felt sorry for the daughter becuase she couldn't watch Happy Days, Dallas, Dynasty and what ever girls were watching. She must have felt so left out? I wonder what ever happened to that girl?

Sold my house in February no cable in the new place. I could easily go without TV and read. I am not a novel kind of a book person, but could easily read books like Waynes 911 books, boat building, survival, How to fly an airplane and all the magazines you could throw at me hot rod, Excellence, Popular Mechanis, etc, etc, etc.

Now, the internet to look things up? That might be a challenge. I used to love going to the library and researching but the internet is so much easier.
