On the other hand, if you want to own the finest example of 18th Century technology put into a 21st Century presentation, you buy a Rolex or a Patek. Hamilton is very nice and all, but it doesn't have the technology of a Rolex. Nothing wrong with that, but no one with a Rolex is arguing that someone shouldn't buy and enjoy a Hamilton. It's kind of like valuing a car that was designed to 1930's standards and somehow found a way to remain relevant into the 1970s.

I love watches but you see Rolex's everywhere. I was pretty stunned the other day to be behind an older guy at the grocery store rocking a patek... Just don't see them that often. Dude got into mighty fine Porsche too!

Cheapest watch you could ever own. The value goes up consistently and significantly. Wish I still had the ones I’ve sold over the years. Worth a lot more now.

To me a watch is strictly a utilitarian piece. Although I think some are really beautiful, I've never had the urge to buy something like a Rolex or Patek. I just don't see a reason for it. I like my cheap, solar powered Seiko & don't feel any inclination for anything more, but if I see someone with a really expensive watch, I don't think any more about it but it's something they value and prefer having.

Got this three weeks ago. It's my grail watch and I want no others. I've only ever seen two more in the wild. No one recognizes these except watch guys. Most people who even wear a watch anymore wear an Apple-type watch.

Many years back, I bought a Rolex 1601, two tone Datejust, with all the original papers, because it was a 1973 original sale, the same year as my targa.
Now it’s worth 4-5 times what I paid then, and so is my targa. I don’t wear it enough though.

I picked up my Deepsea exactly like yours Rick back in January. Had been on the list for a little bit for it.

Like you I have no desire to look at anything else.

I have never seen another one.

Obviously didn't watch the videos...a couple beaten severely enough to be hospitalized..for a watch.

MRM..my Hamilton is 20th century technology. It's a cheap quartz watch. Payed around $200 for it...when? 15 years ago? Still more accurate than your Rolex, and if a mugger wants it, he can have it...

I bought my Rolex submariner used in 2000 for $2500. I’m sure it’s gone up in value since then, but I don’t know what. I think a new one is about $9,000.

That said, if you’re worried about somebody stealing your watch, you might as well be worried about somebody stealing a ring, your car, your wallet etc. Where does it end?

I wear a cheap watch when mugging is more likely.

I have a lot of Rolexes, but rarely wear them. Every Tom, Dick and Harry has one in Hawaii, so it is not anything special. I usually wear an Omega, or Grand Seiko for a nice watch. Beaters are Seiko, Timex, Oris and a bunch of diver's watches.

To me, a car is something utilitarian. I like my cheap, gas powered civic hatchback with a CVT and I don't feel the inclination for anything more. But if I see anyone with a rear wheel engine, air cooled car, I don't think about it but its something they value and prefer having.

No disrespect to you or Paul, but anyone can have a Hamilton or a Seiko or a Timex or what have you. A classic watch comprised of yesteryear's technology and tomorrow's presentation is difficult to achieve and is well worth the price to put on your wrist, if you are so inclined.

Wise of you. I once had a job that involved my carrying significant amounts of cash...I wore cheap clothing...

Sounding pretty elite there...many here, myself included, can easily afford a rolex, but some choose not to. The videos I posted are a good warning. So..be careful out there.

Precisely why I prefer my A. Lange & Söhne in poorest sections of town. Nobody knows what it is.
