Dyson vac disappointing right out of the box...
The last time we bought a vacuum was about ten years ago at Simpson Sears. Now Dyson seemed to come to mind as it is my wife's birthday Thursday. I went by myself to Costco and got the high end Dyson V10 $700 cdn or $550 us. I sneak it into the house and the next morning at 6am while my wife sleeps I take it out of the box and start to charge it. After I charge it I squeeze the trigger I get the red light. Flashing red light according to the instruction book means phone the help line.
While my wife is out shopping at Costco I phone the help line. The rep says I have two choices. Take it back to Costco and get it replaced with a new vacuum or Dyson will send me a new battery. I go with choice two. Battery delivery will take 2 to 7 days. I swear my wife can read my mind. She says we should get a new vacuum from Costco. I say nothing. I will shadow her till Thursday to make sure she does not snoop around the house and find the vacuum. I want this to be a surprise. But the surprise is she gets a vacuum but does not work until we get a new battery. Oh well I tried. Great reviews on this vacuum though. Cheers, Guy |

I have a v8. You'll like it. Its really light and great for quick touchups. Might not be the tool of choice for long whole house vacuuming but I use mine almost exclusively.

I'll leave it to others for the "you got your wife a vacuum for her bday????" commentary, but I've found Dyson products to be overpriced crap. I've had 2 and never again. I have big dogs that shed a ton, so I put vacuums through their paces. The one I've been very happy with is the LG CordZero. They have a few different models. Ours has been going strong now for a few years, great battery life, and it comes with a second battery that charges in the stand, so if it runs out, a quick swap and you are back in business. Highly recommended. It's the only one I've had so far that hasn't broken in < a year.

One thing I look for in a vac (next to how good it sucks) is noise.
I had a vac once that was so loud that I thrashed it like a madman because it physically hurt my ears. Like a needle slowly piercing my eardrums. Most satisfying thing I did that week was going postal on that MF'er. I hear Dysons are pretty loud too, so a no go for me.

I wouldn't hold your breath on actually getting the battery from Dyson. Last year I bought the hair dryer for SO, which came with (2) free gifts(brush and travel case) after the case never arrived, I called Dyson and they would "send it right out" (3)days later I get a box from Dyson--containing a vacum attachment. Call again--the following week, another box, this time with another brush--I gave up at that point. She does like the hair dryer though.

I'm a Shark guy. Just bought the cordless at Costco last weekend for $249. They had an LG for $299, normally $399 but we've always had great luck with Shark vacuums.
I'm telling you, the quickest way to a German gals heart is to buy her a new vacuum! Edit: And the Shark is made for pet hair, lots of great hand tools. I would return the Dyson to Costco and get the LG or Shark. https://www.costco.com/-shark-pet-plus-cordless-stick-vacuum.product.100804289.html

I got my wife one of those. First time she turned it on the cat took off running from the noise.
It may have been too bulky/heavy, but at least it was expensive, so the return was fun.

i am still getting the "one raised eyebrow" for buying my wife a vacuum as a gift. and it was a shop vac, that WE NOW LOVE!
at a group setting, i get one glass of wine in my wife, and the topic comes up that is anything housekeeping adjacent. BOOM - i get under the bus. she will tell everyone i got her a vacumn as a gift. its a good laugh now. but damn. hahaha.. having said that, we have a Dyson. cordless. it is the best thing ever. perfectly powerful and good for 20 minutes on TURBO. its nice to do smaller excursions with it, than to roll out a cord and tackle the entire home.

Guy, if you are spending good money, get a SEBO. You will never need another. (If you have a dog get the "dog fur" set up).

One good thing about Dysons is that parts are readily available. And - in my experience - you'll need them. I have done all kinds of repairs on ours. The total costs of the repairs have probably exceeded the purchase price of a new vacuum, but each time it's "well, if we just replace this one part it should work just fine, so no sense in buying a whole new vacuum". And then it breaks again.
It works well, but what a money pit. In contrast, we also have a Filter Queen from the 1990s (almost 30 years old now) that works perfectly and has had ZERO issues. Wife just doesn't like the canister style.

I bought a Shark cordless at Costco as well about 2 years ago for about $250. I think its a great vacuum and use it almost daily. No issues at all with it. I was hoping to pick one up for my daughter recently but Costco no longer carries them. They did have the Dyson for I think $800?? Cannot see how it could be that much better than the Shark.

Oooh! Hot vacuum cleaner talk.
I like the vintage stuff.. My Electrolux is probably 50 years old - maybe more - it sucks, bags are cheap and I could get parts for it if I needed them, but I don't. Got a little handheld shark or dirt devil to take care of the small stuff. It sucks too.
