What A Week

Wednesday last week my wife was getting set to the barn chores. After closing a doorway, she took a step backwards and caught her heel on a stall mat, causing her to fall heavily on her right side. Got her to emergency in our small town. The Dr, an acquaintance examined her and because there was no displacement or pain with pressure, said his guess was strained groin muscles, but ordered x rays just in case. So the x ray was done on Friday (Happy 65 th Birthday) and she went on with life. Tuesday, the doctor was back in his office, read the x ray and called her immediately. He saw a hairline compressive fracture at the head of the femur. She was in hospital within a couple of hours, they pinned the femur and released her this afternoon. She will not be in the barn for six weeks.
She was so lucky there was no displacement nor pain. The medical staff couldn't believe she had been walking around with a broken hip for most of six days.
Tough lady.

Take care All!
Best
Les

Great that it's all working out. Sounds like it could have been much worse.

Thanks Paul,.
The Surgeon says the real worries are loss of blood supply to the ball end of the femur and her osteoporosis. She has been taking a drug to help build bone density since her arm fracture 4 years ago.
Fingers crossed.

Good thing she had you to help her, Les!

And good call on the X-rays.

Best to your better half on her complete recovery!

Glad to hear she is on the mend. So why the delay in reading the xray?

Wishing the best for your wife - and you too. That is a serious injury. It's good luck was on her side.

That is a mystery to us. I know our friend, Dr. C works in other hospitals. I can only guess since the x ray was done Friday afternoon, he worked in another health centre on Monday and started working through his cases on Tuesday. He was sounding really upset on the phone and called my wife that evening to make sure she was in the bed in the surgical ward.
Her biggest concern now is trying to sort out seemingly conflicting advice from surgeons and physiotherapist regarding how long she needs to use the walker and how much longer she can safely take the medication which promotes uptake of calcium.
She has no pain ( except me) and is doing great. Amazing woman! She was so appreciative of the care she was given by all the staff at Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville NS. They were so kind and caring.
Best to all.
Les

Is she taking Forteo or Prolia? Mom took Forteo for 2 years and has a Prolia booster every 6 months.

Horse barns can be dangerous even without horses present. My wife slipped on some mud after filling one of horse trough that overflowed. She threw something in her back out of place and was bed ridden for a week. She had also helped her covid sick Dad that day, who had fallen, and couldn't get back up.

She ended up in the hospital on oxygen with covid, and pneumonia, from not properly moving for a week...fully recovered now, but we (I caught covid from her) are still trying to build our lung capacity back up after a month

My 84 year old Mother was not that lucky this week, Wednesday night, she and my Aunt were going into a restaurant in Historic, St. Augustine, FL and she tripped and fell on her face, she now has a broken shoulder

I'm glad that Missus OldE/Les is doing relatively well all things considered! Prayers that she has a speedy recovery.
Byron, prayers that your mom recovers quickly!

It seems like both could have been much worse.

Byron! Your poor Mom! Give her our best wishes for a speedy recovery. She probably wouldn't appreciate you posting that pic.

The best news is she is not experiencing a lot of pain. Our seven year old grand daughter is a big help in the barn, getting hay bales from the mow, picking up feed tubs, cleaning stalls. She even picks out the mini donkey's hooves.

To build calcium levels since her forearm fracture four years ago, she has been taking alondrinate (sp?). She had a couple of bad spills from horseback last year and didn't break anything, and scans say her bone density is improved from when she started the medication.

In the meantime, she is getting around the house with a walker and cane, for the stairs. It's good to have her home.
Best to All

Thanks everyone, she is in good spirits. Had she not posted that picture on her Facebook page I wouldn't have had it
This picture was about 30 minutes before she tripped.
