Thanks. Ive got some studying to do. This replaces my exige so feels like a rolling computer by comparison. Remember the 718 also have the rolling mode selector on the steering wheel which ties these things together somehow.
been driving around in sport plus, because more plus must be more better! |

Another thing that Sport Chrono does, I'm fairly certain, that I'd previously forgotten, is relax the PSM/TC nanny. Normal mode, the car will spin the tires or hang the tail a tiny bit. In sport mode, it gives you more of both but will still rein you in if you go too far. I assume in sport plus you might get a bit more of both before it kicks in. And there's also the "off" button for PSM/TC. |
Question,-
will most of these H2O-cooled engines swap back and forth in cars between Boxster and cayman? Will a 911 swap into a Cayman and be passing smog? Are all the sensors in the same spot ? Would the ECM go nuts? I am still contemplating actions here . Actions and what ifs.... What if the IMS blew in a -in an older cayman...a 2009 engine should be better than 2008 and back, correct>? To my way of thinking an older car with 100K on it, but is a Sport model (desirable) might be considered. BUT- if the engine blew and required an extra 20 to 25 K for a rebuild....that just went WAY upside dwn! I don't want to pay about 25 to 35 K for a car and then get a nasty surprise like that.' A rebuild would push the car near or over the 50K mark! total YIPES!!! To me that is insanity and a roll of the dice with IMS issues and a couple of other things |

Yep, 2009 are direction injection. No IMS issues. Carbon buile on top of valves need cleaning on higher mileage engines. I assume if you get one, just bring it in and get it cleaned up. |
Cleaning valves with the engine installed and heads on?
Must be walnut shells dwn the port? |

Italian tune-up? Seafoam? Probably don't want to go bbs down the plug holes route. |
I for one did not know direct inj was a handicap for long TBO
|
Dang, I hate the brit ascents, money conversions, and what all...I did attempt to read it all in my Evelyn Wood way of speed reading..
Yes there is also the cylinder scoring along with the IMS issues on the .1 , That is why I am really leaning on the .2 or a really cheap early model to allow for the demise of the engine. I am in no way interested in a 4-cylinder unless maybe Offenhouser made it , I just cant do it! The flat 6 has a song only a purist can perhaps love ? |
Oh yes, the sound of the 6 with a cat back is pure heaven. One question I have about the 4 cylinder turbo is whether it weighs less and does it retain the Vario-Ram intake feature. Another problem with mid engine vehicles is how to get rid of all of the damaging heat. You need a lot of openings and vents up high and such, a la the Carrera GT.

Per the internet the weights of a 987.2 S manual vs 981 S manua vs 718 S manual are: 3142, 3075, 3153. Varioram was introduces in 1992 964, and I think was standard as of 1995 in the 993. I think at some point, Porsche stopped calling it that, but has similar tech. I'm not sure if every model has been getting the similar tech (ie S vs non-S). I saw a post that said that the 997 3.8L had a different intake than the 3.6L of the same period, but that it's not exactly the same as varioram, but performs the same function. The 718 does appear to have variocam plus. 718 S models have variable geometry on their turbos vs the non-S variants. |

the F4T revs to 7300 and keeps pulling hard the whole way, not like an economy car 4t or even a Subaru flat4T (had many of these). Maybe a bit unfortunate it is a turbo 4, but as far as turbo 4s go its about as good as they come. I don't think the sound is terrible in person either. 718 gts weighs about 75lbs more than old 981 gts, however the current 781 GTS with the 4.0 F6 is another 150lbs on top of that. I think the weight is basically a wash. 718 has a ton of improvements over 981 otherwise. It lost the soundtrack but overall it is a much faster car, like more than half a second faster in the quarter mile. Has quicker steering rack as well. 718 Base can keep up with 981 S at hpde, and 718 GTS isnt much slower than a 981 GT4 on the same tires. 718 S/GTS 2.5T is basically as fast in a straight line as a 993TT or 996TT, which is pretty crazy. They can also pick up 75hp with just a tune. ANyways a mini novelle. I just bought my gts after a few months of searching so this is near to me. |
I guess I’ll chime in for a Cayman discussion which you don’t get much on Pelican. After I wrecked my 997S in 2012 I started looking for a 987.2. Then pictures of the 981 came out in magazines so I upped my budget and ordered a 981 Cayman S that I got June 2013. There was no GTS at the time so ordered close to what I thought a GTS would be: PASM, PTV, 20” wheels, sport seats, MT, plus auto AC, Bose, and dimming mirrors.
I thought I’d start doing track days but except for an occasional autox, I didn’t get it onto a track til 2021. Now after several track days it’s quickly becoming track dedicated. First was 19” wheels in 8.5 & 10 to run track tires since I chewed up my street tires. Then I chewed up the Cup2 tires and decided to tackle the suspension. I went with Ohlins R&T coilovers, Tarett sway bars, front lower control arms and rear toe links. The Ohlins are significantly stiffer than stock and not really a good street spring rate. I understand the rear springs are same as GT4 and fronts stiffer than GT4 to help control the front end roll and front tire wear. I set camber to 2.5/2.0 front/rear but I’m thinking about going to 3.0/2.5 since I’m still having uneven track wear. I’ve also borrowed the Recaro Pole Position seats from my 930 since the 2 way sport seats don’t offer nearly enough track support. Another track item was adding Zunsport grills and a 3rd radiator after I holed an AC condenser on the track. The 3rd radiator lower oil temp by almost 20 degrees so highly recommended if you don’t have a GTS or GT4. For brakes, I’ve been fine with Pagid RS29 yellow pads and fresh brake fluid. Next mods will likely be stiffer transmission and engine mounts. When I wear out the Bridgestone RE 71RS tires I’m using, I’ll probably buy 9&10.5 x 19” Apex wheels and start using my OZ 19” wheels with 235&265/40 tires run at lower psi for more comfort with the stiff springs on the street. I think I am (and we) getting a pretty good education here, and I have glossed over some advice here.
Now considering it. What do i mean? I never thought about the "R" ! In fact, never considered it! I thought they would be priced out of the financial ballpark for me. What is the catch? The prices seem to be lower than i thought they would be. I have tried several youtube channels, but to tell ya the truth the Brit accents and monies as in pounds just irritates me . What is with the "R"? It is more of a stripped dwn model correct? With lighter parts? |
The catch is they are 25 to 40% more than a similar 987s, and many of them have been very heavily tracked. One of the cheapest "special" porsches though
|
Other then 10 more HP, and aluminum doors I think, what is the draw? (for the R )
