Windows 11
Welp, my computer told me it was time to upgrade to Windows 11 on Monday.
First I figured in the belts, suspenders and glue method of solid backups. I cloned my boot drive to an external drive, and did a full backup of boot drive and work drives to my RAID, and copied a backup file to an external drive. Then I made sure I could boot from a USB thumb drive to run the backup program (Acroness) that I use. So today, while watching TV, I hit the download and install button. It takes a while even with my "Gigabit" internet connection. Several reboots, and ta-da Windows 11 in here. So far all seems fine. With Firefox and Pandora running the system is using 12 GB of RAM, or 5% of available memory. Office 365 works fine of course so my Outlook Email is fine. All my favorites are still there in Firefox. So far there is little difference, except no more right click on the task bar to get Task Manager. It is now an "app" that I run. When did programs suddenly become an app? I presume that is all due to cell phones. Anyway, I am supposed to have a week to decide if I really like it, and of not, uninstall it and go back to Win 10 Pro. I will run all the programs I have, (I refuse to call a program an app on my computer) to make sure all of them will work. The biggest reason I upgraded is the programs we pay BIG money for to do aerial photography and mapping all have said Win 11 will be required in the near future. I figure I may as well accept the fact that Win 11 is here, and jump on board. So like the skydiver just after he jumps out of the airplane, so far so good! I will report back on any issues I have.

It's sorta like the old "all poodles are dogs but not all dogs are poodles" in that all applications are programs but not all programs are applications.
A program can be a single instruction that does one thing like list the contents of a directory with no end user interaction required. Apps are generically a collection of programs or GUI providing access to execute programs to get a result for an end user.

The app thing annoys me as well.
I'm still going through grief with my Windows 10 security updates that killed my connection to print drivers. Updating to 11 will give me a month of pain with all of my drivers.

I don’t play computer games. I have no idea what games will play. I did uninstall the Xbox drivers.

I was reading up on how to turn the interface back to Windows 10. Changing the interface for the sake of it is stupid.

Guess it's about time to upgrade the wife's desktop from "Win 7 to Win 10.....She doesn't handle change very well.

Right now I will try to get used to the new start menu. That is the biggest change I see. My desktop is the same, except the start button and search window are now on the task bar. Lots of little changes, but nothing too much hidden. Like Win 10 or the Borg, resistance if futile, people can resist for a while, but eventually the new Windows takes over.

I will likely try to pare down some of the overhead, but Windows is certainly a memory hog.
I just opened task manager, and between the audio and video drivers, and all the other services and crap, I have right now 4 apps, 138 background processes, and 94 Windows processes. Adobe has 6 processes running and Photoshop or Acrobat are not running. The motherboard maker (ASUS) has 15 background processes, even the wireless mouse had 4 processes running. I see 4 background processes just to monitor the memory. Overall the system seems to be a tiny bit faster that before. Several new programs or Apps or whatever are now part of the system. I have an all new audio app that controls the sound to the speakers. It has a setting for stereo, movies or voice. I am happy to see one for voice. One pet peeve for watching movies is very quiet voices, and then the music and explosions and sound effects blow me out of my seat. For some reason the movies I seem to watch have explosions and gun battles, car chases.

I don’t understand, if 12 gb is 5% RAM usage, then your RAM is 240 gb, which seems enormous.
I have 16gb on a stout PC that I built couple years ago. Have RAM prices come down that much while I was not paying attention?

I have 256 Gig of RAM. Dual high end NVIDA video cards, 12TB RAID 5 for storage and a 2 TB M.2 boot drive and second 2 TB M.2 for the work drive, all in the computer case. It is a large case, with multiple cooling fans. I bought the parts, and built it myself to do run a few very expensive programs to do our aerial photography and mapping projects.
We sometimes churn out a single photo mosaic orthophoto that can be 30 GB or more, as a compressed Tif file. It can take the system a couple of days of chewing on a few thousand photos to mosaic the images together. So it is not a regular home use computer from Best Buy. The program we use will eat up the RAM, the bigger the project the more RAM it uses. I have see it using 220 Gig, so it was getting close to max. If it uses all the RAM, the process get really really slow.

You'll probably lose a lot of programs which are now incompatible because emulation or backwards-compatibility or whatever it's called was not built into 10. I believe Win7 was limited to utilizing only 4GB of RAM at a time despite the hardware so that is one major improvement with larger tasks. The first thing I did with Win10 was go into "Apps" settings and turn off everything that was running in the background. Permissions not granted. (they are all on by default) Jigsaw/Xbox still starts on its own occasionally and can't be uninstalled. Same with EdgeUpdate and a few others. This laptop computer only has 4GB of RAM and occasionally slows down, possibly due to background virus scanning and a ton of saved Waterfox bookmarks, but most of the time it runs pretty smoothly.

i9-12900K with liquid cooling RTX-3080 64GB RAM 2 TB SSD 8 TB Harddisk I run 2 monitors, one 32" standard and one 27" in portrait for documents. I certainly don't need more than 64GB of RAM at this time. I think this MB can go to 128. Normally, I'd build my own but the components were hard to find and the price of the assembled and warrantied machine was ~$100 more. Hard to pass up. My last drafting machine lasted 7 years.

On the new PC, I've considered going to Windows 11. I have a few sites that show how to turn "Classic Mode" on by adding some lines into the registry. My issue is not so much myself, but someone like my 88-year-old mother. She had a hard time going from Windows 7 to Window 10, and that interface barely changed.
I have a serious issue with changing the interface for the sake of it. Is there something compelling about the new interface?
