I think it is from people that have very little money. Sad really.
If it was for a lawnmower etc., they would stop at x gallons to add oil or fill till it stops. Same with a bike or sled.
But having said that, I did put $5 in once to get me to the gas station so I could use the company card.

I use a one gal tank for my weed-whacker and blower. I fill the tank until it clicks off.
I have plenty of money...but that's just the way I do it.

A gallon can holds a bit more than that. Unless you're mixing for 2-cycle, fill to a nice even number.... holding a $4 Starbux .

I completely get from where the OP is coming from. I've been there, and have no illusion that it can't or won't happen again. I would even say my fear of it recurring prevents me from taking more risks, which has limited my potential for success.

That said- I like looking at other ways this could happen. Two weeks ago, I left my credit card at home, and went into a store to get something. I only had the cash in my pocket (about $5) to get me through the day. I was scrounging under the car mats looking for change, etc. Anything to get me through. This has happened to me at the gas station too, pulling in on empty, only to realize I left my wallet in another jacket, etc, doing the frantic scrounge through jacket pockets and such.

Got me thinking......back in my college days......1 gallon of gas and enough $$ left over for a 6 pack of my favorite brew!!!
Back then, not even a choice....beer first, then gas....

Recently I've started only getting half tank or thereabouts. I drive a Range Rover P38, that gets about 16mpg around town. My theory is that no reason to lug around the extra weight. Plus half tank last me about two weeks anyway, working from home...

i have no idea what gas costs. i don’t look. i don’t care. i have no idea what milk costs. i need it, i buy it.

but, i’ve been through many periods of very hard times (several in the last 10 years) when $5 for gas was all i had. it wasn’t even till i was in my late 20s or 30s after i got out of school that i could afford to fill up every time i pulled into a gas station. i remember when i moved to NYC i think i ate one meal, a pizza slice, every day for a year

nothing new or out of the ordinary here

I’ve seen similar amounts of gas at the pump and it made me wonder. Was it somebody filling up just enough to get home, or to work?

I think someone was filling up his new flamethrower. It was just a coincidence that he needed 1.137 gallons to fill it and it just happened to cost 5 bucks exactly.

Or, it was some hotshot showing off for his girlfriend that he could stop the pump on five exactly. He nailed it and he nailed her later after she swooned over his manliness.

Hmmm, I can only put $5.00 into the tank of my $60,000 SUV with the $600 monthly payment, so I can get my Frappe/Mocha/Latte with 1/2 pump of caramel, before I head out for black friday deals.

That would be more believable with pics of the hot girlfriend....on a very hot day.
