That Was Lucky

I got kicked by a horse this afternoon.
I know it doesn't sound like I was lucky, but aside from light bruising and some soreness, there are no ill effects.
Since the wife broke her hip last month, I have been doing the barn chores. Tonight was worming medicine time and that went well. Everyone was munching hay in their stalls and I had just placed a full bucket of water on the hook in the big gelding's stall and was walking out to get a second one when I felt the blow just above my left knee on the side. I am always whistling or singing or talking to the equines while I am around them so they know I am there. I have no idea what posessed the silly old bugger to lash out.
I am glad I was able to walk away.
Stay safe out there.

Best
Les

Ouch! That could have turned out a lot worse. Glad you were able to walk (limp) away relatively unscathed.

You've got that right. I remember talking to a friend 20 years age. Her right leg was swollen almost twice it's size. Her mare kicked as she was entering the stall. She came to on her back on the other side of the barn floor.

I think today was a case of better luck than management.

My wife has gotten head butted a coupla times, but never kicked....Horses head moving down, while wife's head is moving up. I agree, I usually have a hand touching them while I talk so I can move around them without spooking.

I do the same when walking around equipment.

The sites are sometimes too congested to give them the wide berth they deserve and with todays Tier 4 engines on a busy site, I don’t assume that because I don’t hear it, doesn’t mean it’s not on.

Jeebus!

I’m glad to hear you are ok. Not sure that animal would have much of a future at my place. I think it would have been on the way to Lethbridge by now.

Ouch, I've seen some videos and thought that getting kicked by a horse looked like it wouldn't be any fun.

Could have been a whole lot worse Les, phew.

When I was a little boy (about 7) I got kicked by a horse. I spent a month or two in hospital It's probably why I'm a bit odd.

Glad you are ok , a horse is a beautiful animal but VERY powerful . Just like a power tool you need to respect the possibility of bad things happening .

Ha! I think some days she'd ship me off before her pretty Morgan.
The old boy is 26 now and has had problems with his back legs for a while. When you do his hind feet, he will pick them WAY up then slowly let them down again, to deal with the discomfort he feels. When I got hit, I told the wife I thought he was kicking because he felt the mini donkey was behind him. That's when she told me he sometimes kicks back to relieve the build up in his muscles or tendons. Nothing personal, I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
That's why I can still walk.
Three more weeks before she sees the surgeon to find out whether she has a mended femur or whether she needs a hip replacement.

Best

Take care Les. You sound like you are the fittest of the two of you right now.
Reminds me of being back on the farm when I was nineteen. I had quick reactions then. Now not so much.

I don't have much experience with them, ridden them twice, and there were some here on our property that we got to interact with before we bought it. There seems to be so much intelligence in their eyes. They are really beautiful animals, but yes, they are big and require respect both as a sentient animal and as a large animal that could do you serious damage if so inclined.

I got kicked a few years back on New Years morning-my arab cross guy was munching alfalfa and I walked up from behind, guess he thought I wanted his breakfast. Luckily I was "just" in range, and he caught me on the hip but at his full extension, so while it hurt it didn't do any serious damage. I did take the mfers alfalfa away after, so there.

When my mother in law passed away my father in law wanted to move in with us. I said to my wife you choose me or your father. She chose me. He could hit well. I was the first male friend of my wife's that he never took a swing at. I never gave him the opportunity.

I have been around horses all my life. We did Morgan’s as well.

Morgans are generally not aggressive.
We still have them.

I know you know just how fortunate you are.

Paul, She picked out this one when he was a month old. There was a breeder here in the Valley who bred the them for color. However, every time you enhance one trait you diminish another and instead of being a compact, typey Morgan, he grew to over 16 hands. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body, but 1200 lbs going the wrong way can cause problems for you. He is now a lawn ornament, as when he developed problems with his legs she retired him and discovered Icelandics. Now There's a laid back equine.

Best

That is a BIG Morgan.

We bred them for trail and showing at certain levels...all based on their personality, which you know well.

When I was chasing the baseball dream, I worked two winters as a swing groom at the Thoroughbred training track in Aiken, SC...which still has a vibrant winter training facility. In those days every groom had three horses and my job was to take their "string" on the groom's day off.

I would always talk to the groom that had the string I was working the next day...the better bred stakes horses were the most aggressive and it was important to know where they were in the training cycle. The horses just off a "breeze" were tired. Those getting ready to "breeze" were amped like Van Halen.

I never got kicked...the closest I came was a "cow kicker" that barely missed me.

This was in the mid seventies and I can still see it.

Mend well!
