What do you feed your dog?

Kibble only? Kibble and canned stuff? Do you cook your dog’s food? I heard dog food is a billion dollar business. I’m retired so I’m cheap but I do want to feed Phoebe good, healthy stuff. I’m just not falling for the organic, mail order, designer, chef inspired (meaning expensive as hell) foods unless they’re proven extremely beneficial. I don’t even eat that well!

You won't like ours. It's frozen patties of raw meat (various types) and pretty expensive. Our dog is 11# and costs about $120 a month. The good thing is that he doesn't generally smell "doggy" and his poops are fairly small and disappear quickly compared to most kibble which seems to petrify. We just thaw the food and he eats it. He's not fond of beef or rabbit, but will eat the rest (lamb, couple kinds of poultry, "surf and turf", venison).

3rd dog we have had. They all are healthy and live a long life.

But if you are looking for s hobbie? Making treats or some meals shouldn’t do any harm.

Sounds like something I might do.

When my dog poops, the smell travels quite far. I have her on a 20’ leash while she poops then I wait a couple of minutes before I bag it. Oh and my dog smells like dog. We give her Costco kibble too.

Years ago (~25, I think), we had a GSD that we fed kibble. She needed a bath weekly because she smelled very doggy. We switched to another diet (cooked meat and veggies) and she stopped smelling. We went from her needing a bath weekly to washing her 2-4 times a year just because or if we went somewhere that she got into water or got especially dirty.

Hmm. I have given my 4 mo old GSD mix three baths since we got her. It’s been raining though so she smells like wet dog a lot.

Our Yorkie has always had "Hills Science Diet" kibble, small pieces and treats are also "Hills Science Diet", banana and peanut butter, and beef and sweet potato soft treats. Of course he gets some "human" food as treats from time to time.

Purina Pro plan for large dogs, usually beef or lamb in the mix. Dinner a tablespoon canned / wet added to the dry. 3 mornings a week gets half a poached egg for breakfast.

Ours is one of those dogs who regulates her own portions. She eats what she needs, and stays svelt.

I certainly wouldn't want to eat just dry kibble my entire life.

He gets lots of grain free treats and tastes of what I’m eating because he was found almost beaten to death several years ago and is paralyzed in the back, so dude is owed!

Purina Pro Plan (large breed) for my Lab... and nothing else... mebbe an occasional small dawgy biscuit/treat Same with my last Lab ... she had 14+ great years.

Recommended by our vet and breeder. Both of them went into rather long-winded explanations of the current state of affairs in the pet food industry, and it really isn't pretty. Most of the "big name" stuff is processed and packaged overseas (read: China) and there is very little oversight in this industry. Both cited all sorts of studies pointing the finger at these pet foods as being implicated quite strongly in any number of later in life health issues in pets. Both told us this one is processed and packaged right here in the U.S., and has superior ingredients, lacking all of the questionable "filler" crap put into the big name brands. We've decided to take their word for it, feeling no real need (nor desire) to spend a great deal of time researching dog food. Yet we do feel entirely comfortable with their recommendations - they see a lot more dogs than we do.

Complete agreement with Supe on this. Merrick is a great product. I use their Hero's Banquet; it is a kibble with pieces of freeze dried meat throughout the kibble. Top it off with Fresh Pet from Costco. The pack loves it. And it is made in Texas!!

My last Lab's first rate breeder got me started on Pro Plan decades ago. My vet of 30 years ... ditto. My current chocolate Lab's breeder had the field champion trophies, and spent 30 years producing some of the best Labs in the USA after he "retired" and sold his furniture business flying all over the US.... 500 of them. He's now 88 .... retired from that too....

They all liked and recommended Brad Penn .... others like Rotella

Lots of good ones .... no people food though .... jmho. My dawgy thrives on Pro Plan .... nothing more. Whatever works for yours .... works .

Purina Pro Plan dry kibble only . We have a different flavor ( beef, turkey,salmon,lamb ) delivered every month . Luke is an Australian/German/lab mix and could really care less about food . He eats when he wants to . So far the vet says he's doing fine.
