Thanks, JR. I've cleaned auto carpet like that before, probably just used laundry detergent.

Each of the components has their own job to do, you’ll be surprised how much crap you can get out of carpet with this stuff.
I recently did a Honda CRV for my sister, I had planned to throw the carpet away and replace it, it was so bad. After cleaning it, I ended up putting it back in. |

I should point out that this works because of the fact that the carpet is removed from the car and you can really put a lot of cleaner and water on it. You won’t get the same results if it’s done with the carpet still in the car and you try to clean it with an extractor.

I'd count on Denis being up to the task. Unfortunately, that smell is everywhere, including the headliner and the ventilation system, which needs to be fogged.

Pour a 12 pack of beer on the seats. Throw some rotting meat under the seat. All sorts of options.

Those are almost worse than cigarette smell, to me. God only knows what chemicals you are breathing with those in a car. Might as well fill it with urinal cakes and wiz on them.

Get off my lawn!

I know one guy that bought a 944 Turbo S from the original owner. The original owner was a lifetime chain smoker. The new owner ended up gutting the interior, replaced all the carpet, replaced the headliner, redid all the upholstery with new leather, new foam. The seats had cigarette burns in the leather, so he knew they had to be replaced when he bought it. He cleaned the ventilation system himself, and paid a professional do clean it as well.
He said he was pretty sure it was finally cleaned of the stink. He then said he took it on a trip, and one day while sitting outside it rained, and then the sun came out. He said he got in the car, and his nose was filled with cigarette stink. It took a few years of sitting with the windows down and lots of deodorizer to finally be OK. Our house was built and lived in for just two years by smokers. We scrubbed and cleaned but on some rainy or high humidity days we could smell a stink of cigarettes. Only after peeling all of the wallpaper, and painting all the walls, and replacing the carpet, and putting in tile and wood floors did the stench go away. Good luck getting it to not stink.

When I bought my Jag it was owned by a smoker. It had been cleaned had a new headliner installed, but if the car sat with the widows rolled up the smell was there. In fact, it was so clean when I bought it that I didn't notice. It was only after the car sat in the sun. And it didn't go away easily, it took time.
One thing I have done after cleaning is lit a book of matches and as soon as they quit flaring, blew them out, removed them and shut the door. Something about the sulphur and other compounds neutralize smells. Lots of people have a matchbook in the bathroom. |

You can buy an ozone generator for not a lot of money, I know friends that have them and use them periodically.

Will your insurance not cover the cost to take it to a professional?
We bought a van once with the same problem. After a good cleaning, it took a year for it to go away.
