Text scam

Last night at 11:44 I get a text, Hey Jacob welcome to doordash. (My name is not Jacob) For support chat with us at the doordash app. boah blah blah. A few minutes later I get a text with a link that I should go to and give them my info so i can get a background check and be paid. At 12:04, I get a text that just says, go to Taco Bell. Today at 8 AM I get a text telling me that my application has been accepted and I am ready to start working for doordash. I blocked them as spam at this point but I can help but wonder what the hell is going on. Anybody else get something like this ?

I get regular texts from a number claiming to be AT&T and congratulation me on paying my texting bill, and I won a free prize if I click the link. I seem to win it every month. I have yet to click the link, and I just delete and block the number.

I had one text all in Chinese.

I had one text that was a link to a web site, and they included a special password to log in with.

I have just deleted them all, and ignored them after deleting them.

This is so odd, I rarely even get spam calls. I do not click on links. I am pretty picky about who gets my number so I am guessing this was done at random. I wonder about he Jacob thing too. Maybe I should get a doordash gig, just for the fun of it.

Just got another text. Congratulating me on my first delivery. I am on my way to making big money.

I’ve received mass group texts before. Clearly computer generated as there are over 100 numbers all with sequential suffixes.

The message is usually “can you pick up some gift cards”? Or “did you get the (item)?”

Obviously junk…the incredibly annoying part is people on the text chain reply to it for days!! Phone blows up with people asking questions or just replying SCAM etc.

Blocking the original number doesn’t stop all the reply’s from coming through.

I had one of these where my number was spoofed in as the original sending party.

All I can figure is that who ever reply’s they harvest that as a known good number.

Someone else (Jacob) started working for them and typed in the wrong number. That's my guess. Jacob has probably been getting emails, app notifications, and (well, you) texts. Since he's probably getting the info at least 1 but probably 2 other ways, he probably isn't aware that the number is wrong (or he is but doesn't care).

Thats possible. I am pretty sure they get notified of each delivery run via text and have the option to accept or not. I was tempted to respond to the first text to say they have a wrong number but I decided its a scam so I did not.

If you'd just got the one, or two back to back, I'd think it was a scam, but the continuing texts that all seem valid makes me think it may be something else. I'm sure it still could be a scam, but it seems like they usually aren't putting that much effort into it without some sort of positive feedback.

The one that made me really think it was a scam was the third or fourth one. It came within 15 minutes of the first. So much for the background check. It just said, go to Taco Bell. Thats it. Several Taco Bells in this area.
You know if it was done by email I would have corresponded with them and clicked on the link. I have a throw away linux partition that I can wipe and reinstall in minutes. Not so easy with my phone.

We can laugh and not click but some exploits are 'zero click':

Scary stuff:

https://googleprojectzero.blogspot.com/2021/12/a-deep-dive-into-nso-zero-click.html

A complete system running on a turing complete language using a flaw in a xerox fax compression format from the late 90s.

Install those security updates!

Bogus delivery notifications with a link seems to be a thing right now. Considering how many people shop online I'd bet these scams works.

FYI: Most of the scammers are based in India and "we" trained them!
- Because someone long ago thought it was a great idea to "offshore" IT support work.

I often get delivery notifications when I have nothing to be delivered. I wish the offshore thing had never happened. I hate it all around. Chinese knock off items posing as brand name items also piss me off. All because "cheaper is better" I guess.

It's just so short sighted. The only thing that matters is the next quarter's earnings!

Or just as bad, Chinese low quality, engineered to a price crap that is the brand name stuff that's being sold at the big box stores. It's not even a knock off.
