That usually works, but many years ago (35), I had that just result in the bottom of the filter ripping off. I ended up having to use a cold chisel or regular screwdriver to pound the flange at an angle to get the rest of the filter off. It was the result of taking a car to an oil change place.

First time removing the filter after acquiring my 911... that sucker was not budging. First with the proper "thingy" that fits over the end of the filter, then I bought a filter "strap wrench", then I resorted to a big screw driver punched through the filter.... that just mangled the filter, but still stuck .... ALL while turning counter-clockwise, and I just had a mangled mess on my hands.

I then bought a pair of "Big Azz" channel lock pliers (yes, that name is stamped on them) and got that sucker off

I have a small collection of strap tools and LARGE sockets so I rarely have an issue but the screw driver through the side trick has saved me a few times. The newer screw on plastic caps work well but it's really easy to scar them.

Probably went over his oil change limit and it cooked on, that or the dummy buggerd it up and tightned it instead of loosened it..

As long as there's room to rotate the spear this is a quick and clean method.

I challenge anyone to use a screwdriver and remove a stuck filter by turning it clockwise! Unless you have left-handed clocks

It works on bicycle cranks and some truck lugs. Turns it brand new.

After 30 years 375,000 mile on my El Camino I have done a lot of oil changes. Only once have I had a problem getting the filter off. It turns out the dummy that put the last filter on (me) did not inspect the old filter very well. It left the rubber gasket behind on the engine. The new filter just added in a second gasket. For whatever reason the two gaskets bonded and made a crazy seal. I tried my oil filter wrench, and two different strap wrenches. I finally had to get a chain wrench that really bit down on the filter and a long pull handle to get it to let go. When I got it off, I saw two rubber gaskets and really cussed at the dumb MF that did not check the engine before putting on the new filter. Now I double check it is just a film of oil on the engine where the filter screws on. And it sure gets a nice coating of oil on the rubber gasket.

For my wife's Macan, the filter is a cartridge. The housing has a 32 mm nut on top. It has two paint parks, on on the housing top, and one on the bottom. Tighten to there, and it simply stops. Very easy to do.

Channel Lock actually makes a filter wrench/pliers. They work great.

Just taught my son that trick last week. Did his first oil change and that beech wasn't moving and my filter socket didn't fit.
