Crazy to consider either, but hey...I owned an early 911 and a 914 previously.

The ur quattro has languished in the collector car market for decades. You could buy them for a song and a dance. Finally, they're hot with collectors and prices have skyrocketed. I owned 3 (all at the same time!) and it's my favorite car to drive other than a 911. I had an 1981 Euro-spec car that came into the US before they were sold here, a 1985 original-paint non-sunroof car, and a full-blown 1983 rally car (not a factory-built car). All sold 6-7 years ago.

I've noticed there are very few old Audi's out there compared to Mercedes and BMW. Try finding a 70's Audi for sale, any model.

Looks like I'm back in the game with this '83 quattro. All is right in the universe again The Ur quattro has pretty much been in my life since 1982. That year, a good friend's father bought one brand new and it was the most incredible car ... AWD and turbocharged and 5 cylinders!!! That was exotic, mindboggling stuff and I had read everything about them in Autoweek and the other car mags. But now I was hooning around in one, sideways in the snow with that unmistakable 5-cylinder soundtrack. They were crazy expensive when new (almost the same as a Ferrari 308). That same year, John Buffum raced the ex-Michele Mouton car at the POR rally in Houghton, MI where I lived, basically right outside my door. I was hooked. This one is nearly identical to my friend's car in 1982.

Thanks Steve! I was not expecting to own another and was not actively looking. But the right car for the right deal came along unexpectedly over the weekend

I worked at a Porsche/Audi dealer in the '80s and a new Quatro Coupe was ~$38k, which could also buy you a new 3.2 Carrera a few feet over on the showroom floor. Needless to say, they were rare and special cars. Congrats on the score, Curt!

The Sport Quattro was and is a completely different animal. I did not click on the link in the OP but I suspect that there was some confusion over the very different cars being discussed. A FWD Audi coupe from the '80s, (a very good looking car), is probably worth $8-10k in clean condition these days. A Quattro coupe is worth a lot more and is much rarer.

A Sport Quattro, like this one my cousin was offering on BaT, is a slightly different market:

It's exactly times like that when the best stuff seems to happen, when you aren't looking or expecting.

Yeah, the Sport quattro is an entirely different animal from a value/rarity point of view. One would be hard-pressed to find one under $500k these days. Here's a great clip (I uploaded this from the original VHS tape so the quality is crap) showing Buffum in a Sport at the 1985 POR Rally. While today's WRC cars are faster, there was no more spectacular show than the Group B cars. This was like the Tasmanian Devil flying through the woods I showed this clip to Buffum a few years back and he got an ear-to-ear grin.

Hey Curt, congrats on the car. On those rally cars with all the wattage up front, how do they power all of them?

On the lights, I know that I just ran a slightly larger battery than stock with no problems. Maybe a bigger alternator too on the rally car, can't remember? And lots of relays.

^^^ Thanks! I will do that. It's a pretty tight community and they often trade hands thru word-of-mouth, like the one I found, without ever going on the market.

It's been a guessing game as to how many are left in the US. Only 664 ever sold here. But, of course, nearly all were winter-driven. There are so many that are completely rusted, roached out, crashed or crushed. Some say there're only 300 or so left and many of those are modified into rally tributes or have had 20V motors installed. Not many original survivors left.
