Angry At least 16 injured in Brooklyn subway shooting, undetonated devices found

Just got home for lunch and saw this on TV.......

NO POLITICAL COMMENTS PLEASE!

At least 16 people were injured, including 10 who were shot, when a suspect set off a smoke grenade and unleashed gunfire on a Brooklyn subway train during Tuesday morning rush hour, the NYPD and law enforcement sources told The Post.

The gunman — possibly disguised as an MTA construction worker and wearing a gas mask — launched his bloody assault around 8:30 a.m. on a Manhattan-bound N train at the 36th Street station in Sunset Park, where authorities later discovered several undetonated devices, FDNY and police said.

The suspect is believed to have set off the smoke grenade moments before firing off a barrage of bullets, police sources told The Post.

It is just crazy that someone can think that is something they want to do. Plan it, and go through with it.

Lots of talk about subway utilization rates. Wonder how that is calculated and if they factor in total city population numbers (which surely have dropped) when doing so.

This is my exact thought anytime something like this happens. There are so many moments during the course of planning this kind of mayhem where a different corner could have been turned and the plot abandoned. It must take a very rare type of crazy to see an event like this from planning to completion.

I am also struck by the differences in planned exit strategies. Some know this is their final act (Mandalay Bay). Others don't seem to have thought that far in advance (Boston Marathon).

Unprovoked mass violence doesn't make any sense, yet there seem to be common themes and mechanisms. That's hard for me to wrap my head around.

Fortunately, there aren't that many crazies out there in the grand scheme. There are certainly more than we would like, of course. They are global and various factors, whether it be population density, culture, whatever probably somewhat affects their distribution. They are crazy, so expecting them to be rational and methodical is unrealistic. They may have a vision of how things will go in their head that is as crazy as they are. They may also have not thought any farther than the event. Who knows what is in their mind.

Ties to NY.

My Dad - born in Newark, NJ - grew up in Staten Island, NY. While a young family living in Norfolk, VA, we would travel to Staten Island to visit my Grandparents and Aunt Bobbie. She worked for US Steel all her life. My Grandfather - a machinist by trade - worked at the Brooklyn Shipyard. Carrying his toolbox on his shoulder (I was told) as he rode his bicycle to work each day.

My last girlfriend was from Long Island and a former girlfriend, of Cuban heritage, lived in New York for a while, before re-locating to Miami.

New Yorkers are a different breed. Resilient.

It's a freaking miracle no one was killed in the incident, the way it sounds.

Media reports of gas - but I think they mean smoke discharged. Gas would mean harmful past smoke inhalation, which in itself does a fair amount of harm.

What I always wonder in these kinds of things is someone was upset and what level of conflict resolution failed in the process.

Would like to know more about my last comment when all is said and done......

I just heard the gun jammed on the shooter - may explain why injuries, as bad as they were, weren't any worse.......

Really, Junk? Does that make Hondas and Toyotas junk too? Because they seem to fill a similar spot in the the hierarchy. There are a ton of them out there. They seem to be really reliable, even when abused. And they are pretty cheap.

You mean the mental illness excuse for actions rears its head in many ways.

Boulder prosecutors already used that one for the suspect in the King Soopers shooting, then spirited him away.

Suspect identified through the van rental/keys.

https://nypost.com/2022/04/12/nypd-investigating-possible-explosion-in-brooklyn-subway-station/

Quote:
Investigators were able to tie the van to James after finding a credit card at the scene that had charges for a gas mask, smoke bombs and the U-Haul rental out of Philadelphia, law-enforcement sources said.

The key to the U-Haul was found at the scene of the shooting, too, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said during an evening news briefing.
Quote:
Police later identified Frank James, 62, as a “person of interest” in the shooting but have not yet determined if he was the triggerman.

James had previously railed against Mayor Eric Adams and made bizarre threatening rants on YouTube.

He said he’d been treated for mental-health issues at a facility with “violence,’’ not “physical but the kind of violence a child experiences in grade school … that would make him go get a gun and shooting motherf–kers.”

Such a sad story. Amazing nobody was killed, but how will their lives be affected over the years.

Why do criminals always leave behind a drivers license, credit card, etc.

It was very planned. Planned for the worst possible outcome.

I'm glad no one here has mentioned "why didn't anyone notice him" or anything like that.
I used to ride the subway to school every day, 7AM in and 9PM out. You keep a basic level of situational awareness up, but the fact is, the train is meant to be a safe place, a place where you can read the paper and drink your coffee or sleep, with your backpack wrapped in your arms so no one grabbed it. You watched for con men, and for drunks, and for the dude with his eyes rolled up in his head, no problem. Every part of society mixed on the train, rich and poor, white, black, brown, anyone, educated or not...you were all there for a reason, and everyone was cool about that.

Never ever ever would you assume or plan for some jackhole stepping on the train, tossing a smoke grenade and them lighting things up with a pistol.
